The Hunting Knife is a tool in The Long Dark for butchering, crafting and self defense.
Overview
The Hunting Knife has a number of uses: self-defense, harvesting gut, hide and meat from animal carcasses, as well as cloth and Tinder Plugs. It's used as a tool for Crafting varied equipment. It may also serve as a makeshift Can Opener to avoid spillage, or to break through iced-over fishing holes for Ice Fishing.
Knives are repairable with a Whetsone or at the Milling Machine.
Uses of Hunting Knife:
- Self Defense during a Wolf Struggle.
- May be used to harvest frozen carcasses (Knives have faster unfrozen meat, gut and hide harvesting speeds. Hatchets are only faster at harvesting frozen meat)
- Crafting Survival Bows, Simple Arrows and Arrow Shafts.
- Crafting animal hide clothing/tools: Bear Skin Bedroll, Bearskin Coat, Deerskin Boots, Deerskin Pants, Moose-Hide Cloak, Travois and Wolfskin Coat.
- Open or maintain holes in the ice for Ice Fishing (Bladed tools break ice faster, but take more condition loss when doing so).
- Harvesting textiles (Curtains, Old Bedrolls, Pillows or Towels) for Cloth.
- Breaking down Cardboard Boxes for Tinder
- Open canned foods without spillage
When carried and selected for self-defense at the start of a Wolf Struggle, Hunting Knives deal medium damage with a low chance per-hit to cause the wolf to flee, and a high chance to inflict puncture wounds, a fast form of Blood Loss (which is lethal to the Wolf over time). Hunting Knives are as effective at filling the Struggle Meter as Prybar, and slightly more effective than Improvised Knife at ending struggles in this way, especially on difficulty modes other than Interloper. Obtaining
Hunting Knives may be found in all regions, usually near frozen corpses or structures. They may also be found inside structures atop/beneath furniture or in drawers.
In Interloper mode hunting knives will never spawn; requiring forging to create an Improvised Knife.
Repair
The hunting knife can be repaired using a whetstone and the Sharpening skill, restoring 3% condition to the hunting knife and for 5% condition damage to the whetstone.
The Milling Machine in Bleak Inlet or Blackrock may repair a non-ruined hunting knife to 100% condition for one Scrap Metal, during an active Aurora. N.B. The knife has a breaking threshold at 15% condition, usage below this number risks ruining it for good.
Game history
- Version 0.136 on 2 October 2014 introduced the ability to harvest using the hunting knife and Hatchet, among other changes.
