Hunting Rifle is a Tool used for hunting and defense against wildlife. It is a bolt-action weapon with an internal magazine capacity of 10 rounds. When wildlife is hit by a shot from a Hunting Rifle, it provides experience in the Rifle Firearm skill.
It is maintained through the use of Repair skill with a Firearm Cleaning Kit or a Milling Machine.
Locations
- Common Spawn Points: The Hunting Rifle can be found in various locations throughout the game world, including cabins, hunting lodges, and sometimes in vehicles.
- Rarity: It is relatively rare but can be consistently found in key hunting and outdoor areas within the game.

Usage
Hunting
- Main article: Hunting
The rounds fired from the Hunting Rifle move at a high velocity, and travel in a straight line. Upon hitting a target, they can cause massive internal injuries, potentially killing animals instantly. If the round fails to cause internal injuries sufficient enough to kill instantly, the round will still result a bleeding wound that will kill the animal eventually.
The rifle has a maximum range of approximately 50 paces. Targets beyond the maximum range cannot be hit. Hitting a fleshy target will produce a blood spray effect.
Critical hits
Critical hits cause the animal to instantly die after being hit by a shot. The following table contains the critical hit chance based on the location that was shot on the animal.
| Wildlife | Critical Hit Chance | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Head | Neck | Torso | Hips | Limb | ||
| Rabbit | 100% | |||||
| Ptarmigan | 100% | |||||
| Deer | 100% | 50% | 40% | 25% | 10% | |
| Wolf | 100% | 100% | 33% | 10% | 10% | |
| Bear | 15% | 10% | 5% | 3% | 3% | |
| Moose | 25% | 20% | 10% | 0% | 0% | |
Bleeding wounds
Wildlife take a specific amount of time to bleed out, as follows:
| Wildlife | Bleed Out | |||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Head | Neck | Torso | Hips | Limb | ||
| Rabbit | Instant | |||||
| Ptarmigan | Instant | |||||
| Deer | Instant | 15 min | 45 min | 60 min | 240 min | |
| Wolf | Instant | 20 min | 60 min | 90 min | 120 min | |
| Bear | 60 min | 90 min | 240 min | 360 min | 480 min | |
| Moose | Immune to bleed out | |||||
Maintenance
Decay
Hunting Rifles decays 4% for every three shots taken, incrementally decaying with each shot. When a rifle is at full condition, 75 shots can be taken before it decays to broken. With a level 5 Rifle Firearm skill, the decay is reduced by 50%, incrementally decaying 2% for every three shots taken, with a total of 150 shots for a rifle at full condition.
Repair
Hunting Rifles can be cleaned with a Firearm Cleaning Kit to prevent jamming and improve accuracy.
Cleaning a rifle consumes 5% condition from the rifle cleaning kit and restores some condition to the hunting rifle, based on the player's skill level. Each rifle cleaning kit can be used up to 20 times for repairing hunting rifles.
| Item | Repair time (min) | Restoration time (min) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hunting Rifle | 30.0 min | 240.0 min | |
Jamming
Hunting rifles have a chance to jam based on the following two conditions:
- The condition of the Hunting Rifle. Lower condition rifles have a higher chance of jamming.
- The condition of the Rifle Ammunition. Lower quality ammunition has a higher chance of jamming.
Jamming occurs when the rifle improperlys load the next cartridge. Attempting to fire will result in a misfire. To clear the jam, the bolt must be cycled again manually by triggering reloading. Doing so will eject the unspent cartridge onto the ground near the player, from where it can be picked up and used again. Unloading and reloading the rifle in inventory will also clear the jam, but without dropping any ammo.
Tips and Strategies
Shooting Technique
Depending on the player's rifle skill and condition, when aimed, the rifle will sway or shudder slightly, affecting the player's ability to aim. The sway increases if the player's Fatigue is low. The player will also begin to shiver when freezing, making aiming even more difficult.
Although the rifle does not have a scope, aiming at a point will cause the player's view to zoom in towards said point, effectively allowing the rifle to be used as a weak optic. The same can be done with the Survival Bow and the Woodright's Bow
Ammunition Management
A rifle can be loaded with 10 rounds of Rifle Ammunition. 5 rounds can be loaded at once with stripper clips, but rounds will be loaded individually if there are 6 or more rounds in the magazine already or if the player does not have 5 or more rounds on them. Loading will continue until interrupted by clicking or canceling, or the magazine is fully loaded.
Firing a rifle will automatically expend a Rifle Shell Casing out of the ejection port and onto the ground as a new round is cycled into the chamber, and can be picked up. New rounds can be created with the Rifle Shell Casing with the Gunsmithing skill.
Comparisons
Other Rifles
The Hunting Rifle has 3 variants, each having distinct differences from the base hunting rifle. These variants each spawn once per game, and they can be viewed in more detail below:
- Barb's Rifle - Heavier but more durable
- Vaughn's Rifle - Lighter and faster, but breaks quickly
- Curator's Rifle - Longer effective firing range

- Added to game.
Trivia
- The rifle in the Long Dark is inspired by the Lee-Enfield bolt action rifle, which was Britain's standard issue rifle until the 1960s <ref>https://x.com/RaphLife/status/1126240186050834432</ref>.
- The jams featured in the game appears to be caused by rim-lock, which is where the rims on two cartridges snag and cause loading problems.
