As is the case in many other games, the player community of The Long Dark has created their own Lexicon of jargon or "slang" which may be seen when reading the Hinterland Forums, The Long Dark's Steam page, or Discord chat rooms. Some of the most common slang is alphabetized below via topic:

Gameplay/Mechanics

Gameplay Terms

  • Daisy Chaining/Torch Chaining: a method of chaining a single flame across multiple Torches to conserve matches
  • Flare Bear: a method of using Flare Shells with a Distress Pistol to kill a Bear/Moose or other Wildlife in a single headshot
  • Goating, Mountain Goating: The practice of sticking to steep, near vertical slopes
  • Hibernation: Letting condition drop to as low as the player dares via starvation, then eating just enough food to sleep and heal up. Saves calories
  • Jiggling teas: picking up and replacing teas and other reheatable food around the fire so they won't burn (named after the sound cups make when selected)
  • Loot table: a table listing where various items spawn
  • Microharvesting/Shredding: harvesting and cooking very small amounts of meat at a time to artificially increase harvesting and cooking skills (not really possible since Buried Echoes update)
  • Naked meat mile: dropping heavy inventory, including clothes, to retrieve massive amounts of meat (or meat bags after quartering) without becoming overburdened.
  • RNG: Random number generator. Determines where what loot spawns, what the weather will be that day, how much meat will be on a carcass, and more. Can be thought of as luck in the game.
  • Shift Tapping/Tap Sprinting: a term used to describe maximizing Stamina usage by tapping the Shift key at regular intervals to preserve momentum while Sprinting. Doing so allows one to slightly save Stamina and travel farther distances, something that is not possible when holding the Shift key fully until the Stamina bar depletes when Sprinting. Often used in speedrunning.
  • Sleepy-eye: low Fatigue meter
  • Starvation Strategy: starving during the day, then eating only enough at night to sleep and regain the lost condition. Saves on calories and widely used in Interloper. Similar to Hibernation
  • Stick north: dropping a Stick from the inventory to get reoriented -- they always point the same way
  • Stink: Scent indicator
  • Torch Walk: walking outside without a weapon, using only Torches for protection

Custom Challenge Names

  • Birchman: Same as Deadman, but with Birch Bark Tea allowed.
  • Deadman (DMC): custom Interloper where passive regeneration and Birch Bark Tea are disabled (similar to As the Dead Sleep)
  • Deadworld: a custom world where all live animal spawns are disabled
  • Gunloper: custom Interloper where firearms are enabled
  • NOGOA: No One Gets Out Alive challenge - a specific custom file that has all the settings on their most harsh and spawns you at midnight in a blizzard
  • Outerloper: Interloper, but where the player can't enter any building (self-enforced rule)

More custom challenges can be found Here.
