Find the Railway Maintenance Yard and get into the repair shed.
CHAPTER TWO
YOU FIX MY RIFLE?
After leaving the Trapper's Homestead, if the player attempts to enter The Ravine by the Carter Staging Area or re-enter Mountain Town by Trapper's Cabin, Mackenzie will say:
- Mackenzie: "I'd better stay focused."
- Mackenzie: "I can't afford to get distracted."
- Mackenzie: "That's not the right way."
Mackenzie leaves the Trapper's Homestead and heads south, entering Forlorn Muskeg. He passes through the region without any eventful encounters, aside from a scripted Wolf feeding on a Deer Carcass in the middle of the tracks. He passes through the region into Broken Railroad, and navigates around a Landslide, before passing a Locomotive Engine. He walks past it, entering the Maintenance Yard and the Shed.
Use the hand-driven milling machine to repair Jeremiah's rifle.
Inside, he spots the Hand-Powered Milling Tool and walks to it as a cutscene plays
Mackenzie trips on a corpse and hits his head into the corner of the metal table, staggering on the floor and holding his head with his hand
Mackenzie: "Holy... that smarts."
He gets up on his feet, shaking his head to wake himself up, before looking over the body
Mackenzie: "He doesn't look so good. Hmmm...what's that on the floor beside him..."
Mackenzie picks up a scrap of paper and reads it
Mackenzie: "Forest Talkers? Sounds like some kind of indie band. Maybe this guy was one of them. I guess I should check out this Lodge."
The cutscene ends
Mackenzie: "I have to stay focused on the task at hand."
Mackenzie walks over to the Hand-Powered Milling Tool
Mackenzie: "This is what I'm looking for."
He picks up a pair of Bolt Cutters lying nearby and then starts repairing Jeremiah's Broken Rifle. After some time passes, Mackenzie repairs the Rifle and leaves the shed, preparing to go to the Lodge mentioned in the note
Look for more info about the Forest Talkers at the old Hunting Lodge.
As he leaves the Shed, another cutscene begins. Mackenzie grabs his head in pain and stops walking forward
Mackenzie: "Ahh....Damn...I must have hit my head harder than I thought."
He staggers forwards and faints, and awakens at night.
Mackenzie: "How long was I out for?"
The artificial lights in the building around him are all turned on, along with a pc monitor
Mackenzie: "...the lights..."
Mackenzie walks out of the building into floodlights, seeing Wolves all around him bathed in an unnaturally green hue. The Aurora hums in the sky. Three Wolves close in on him, stopped by the artificial flood lights
Mackenzie: "Oh shit... What the hell? They...hate...the light."
The Wolves growl in place, eventually running away in fear of the light. Mackenzie follows the lamps to protect himself from the Wolves, following a path of them behind the Maintenance Yard, eventually using the Bolt Cutters he found earlier to cut open a gate. As he continues to follow the lights into the mountain, he eventually finds the Hunting Lodge the Forest Talkers note mentioned
Mackenzie: "Wow...this must have been really nice, once upon a time."
He enters the Lodge
Search the Lodge for supplies. Something here could save your life.
Mackenzie: "Hmm...looks like this might be where those eco-terrorists were hiding out. Let's see if they left anything useful."
Mackenzie heads downstairs and finds a Flashlight and a cutscene plays. He picks it up, shaking it and slowly smacking the head, but it does not work
Mackenzie: "Battery's probably dead. Still...might come in handy at night."
He puts it in his back pocket and the cutscene ends. A tutorial message pops up

A phone begins ringing upstairs. If the player heads back downstairs and check the table at the end of the basement, Mackenzie will find the Forest Talker Map Note
Mackenzie: "Well well...what do we have here?"
Mackenzie eventually goes up to check on the ringing, and finds a Phone Box near the front door, but the call goes silent the moment he leaves the basement. His attention instead turns to the Hunting Lodge Rifle over the nearby fireplace, and a cutscene begins
He takes it off the gun rack and looks it over, blowing dust off it. Mackenzie then aims it and looks down the iron sites
Mackenzie: "Not much for guns, but...after what I've been through lately - - better to be safe than sorry."
The cutscene ends and a tutorial message pops up once the player leaves the Lodge

Mackenzie prepares to return to Jeremiah with his repaired Rifle, and a few other goodies he found at the Lodge.
Get back to Jeremiah.
The walk back to Jeremiah is largely an uneventful one, but once Mackenzie enters Forlorn Muskeg and walks past the timber rail cars, he sees the Old Bear. Doing what Jeremiah said, he avoids the beast, and makes his way back to Mystery Lake and eventually the Trapper's Homestead. A cutscene begins as Mackenzie walks inside
Jeremiah is sitting on his cot, looking much better. Empty cans of Pork and Beans and Pinnacle Peaches lie at his feet and all over his Work Bench, as well as a bonus Cariboo alcohol bottle. He laughs as he sees Mackenzie walk in
Jeremiah: "Ha. Well... You look like hell, Mackenzie."
Mackenzie: "Thanks." He looks over the mess that Jeremiah has made of his cabin "I love what you've done with the place."
Jeremiah: "Ha! I see you're an interior design critic now. You fix my rifle?"
Mackenzie tosses the repaired rifle into his hands
Mackenzie: "Yup. Found one of my own, too."
Jeremiah looks over the work done to his restored rifle and admires the craftsmanship. Mackenzie sits on the bench next to him
Jeremiah: "Damn...not bad for a pilot. You're full of surprises. Maybe he can make it after all."
Mackenzie: "Now what? I really need to get going. My friend is out there, and with all this wildlife on the loose..."
Jeremiah: "Woah. Slow down. A rifle will get you out of a jam, but survival's about what you know. And right now, you don't know shit."
Mackenzie: "What do you suggest? Books on tape?"
Jeremiah: "Ha! Smart ass. No. What I suggest is Jeremiah's Survival School. Student population: one. Let's see if we can keep you alive long enough to graduate."
Mackenzie: "Hmph."
The cutscene ends as the player stands over Jeremiah. The message "JEREMIAH NOW TRUSTS YOU MORE NOW. (+10)" appears

Jeremiah (Text): "Something on your mind?"
- MYSTERY LAKE
Mackenzie (Text): "Can you tell me more about this area?"
Jeremiah (Text): "What do you want to know?"
Mackenzie (Text): "Seems like the more I know about the area, the better chances I have of surviving."
Jeremiah (Text): "If you think a lesson on local history's going to help you out, here - - "fill your boots" as the Islanders like to say."
- FLARES
Mackenzie (Text): "There seem to be a lot of wolves around Mystery Lake."
Jeremiah (Text): "Yeah. Even more than usual."
Mackenzie (Text): "You have any suggestions on how I should deal with them? Apart from staying far away, or shooting them if they get too close..."
Jeremiah (Text): "I know a place where you might be able to find some old flares."
Mackenzie (Text): "They don't seem to like the noise. Throw one at 'em and they're likely to run. Thanks."
- SURVIVAL TOOLS
Jeremiah (Text): "You're getting pretty handy out there. For a pilot. You won't get far without a good Hatchet or Knife, though."
Mackenzie (Text): "I'm keeping my eyes open for them."
Jeremiah (Text): "You know...you find a Forge and the right materials...you could probably fashion a half-decent Hatchet of your own."
Mackenzie (Text): "I'm listening."
Jeremiah (Text): "There's an old Forge near the abandoned Spence Homestead...over the other side of the Muskeg. You'll find most of what you need there."
- CARTER DAM
Mackenzie (Text): "What do you know about the dam?"
Jeremiah (Text): "Just enough to find my way through when I need to. The place is a mess."
Mackenzie (Text): "Seems like a weird place to build a dam, though."
Jeremiah (Text): "Yeah, there's some odd local history about it. Great Bear's full of those stories. Just another example of people trying to make a buck out here, I guess."
- NATURAL GEAR
Mackenzie (Text): "Your Bearskin coat - - it looks really warm."
Jeremiah (Text): "It is! The best fur you can get out here, for warmth and protection. You can have one too."
Mackenzie: (Text) "Really?"
Jeremiah (Text): "Yeah. You only have to kill a bear."
Mackenzie (Text): "Right."
Jeremiah (Text): "If you're not feeling up to it, you can make some decent clothing...from Deerskin. Supple with decent protective qualities."
Mackenzie (Text): "Good to know."
- SHELTER
Mackenzie (Text): "Seems like the weather can turn at any moment out here."
Jeremiah (Text): "Oh yeah, and you haven't seen anything yet. Wait until a blizzard rolls in. You can get caught out there...wandering around in circles, for days. Or until you die."
Mackenzie (Text): "I'd rather not, to be honest."
Jeremiah (Text): "Well. If you have no other choice, dig a hole in the snow..."
- GREAT BEAR
Mackenzie (Text): "So...Great Bear. You lived here long?"
Jeremiah (Text): "Nevermind, pilot."
Mackenzie (Text): "Well...if I'm going to be stuck here, I'd like to know a bit more about what I'm up against."
Jeremiah (Text): "This place has its own history. Stuff outsiders don't know much about."
Mackenzie (Text): "So it seems. It's like Great Bear doesn't exist for the people who don't live here. I guess people get...caught up in their own little world."
Jeremiah (Text): "Yup. It seems that way. You want to understand why people don't like outsiders here?"
Mackenzie (Text): "Yeah, I do."
- OLD CORESPONDANCE
Jeremiah (Text): "I need you to do something for me before you leave Mystery Lake."
Mackenzie (Text): "What's that?"
Jeremiah (Text): "I have some old letters. Stuff I don't want anyone to get their hands on."
Mackenzie (Text): "Don't tell me...correspondence from personal ads?"
Jeremiah (Text): "Smart ass. I'm serious, Mackenzie. Those letters are important to me."
Mackenzie (Text): "Ok. You want me to get them and bring 'em back?"
Jeremiah (Text): "Nah. Just burn 'em. It'll be better that way."
Mackenzie (Text): "Ok..."
Jeremiah (Text): "No peeking. Trust me, it's better if you don't."
Mackenzie (Text): "Got it. Find them. Burn them. Where are they?"
Jeremiah (Text): "Old supply cache of mine. More like a bunker, I guess."
Mackenzie (Text): "What do you need a bunker for out here?"
Jeremiah (Text): "I have my reasons. Burn those letters. And take whatever else you need from there."
