it becomes about as good as the hatchet once you hit revolver level 3 and can fire it during a struggle instead of just clubbing the wolf with the handle. 

But once you hit lvl 5 though it becomes godly. you can usually get a shot off in ~2 seconds and insta kill the pupper. Best struggle weapon in the game - by a long shot (pun intended)
