"What gives" is that the person who designed the region map had to rotate the map counter-clockwise to make it fit in the program they were using.  On the map by Whiteberry-Toarda, <- is north, -> is south.  Towards the top of the map is east and towards the bottom of the map is west.

Yes, I know.  It confused me too... and still does, if I forget to check the compass rose (the thing next to the the map legend that tells you which way north is.)
