You got lucky.  I've hit a moose around a dozen times with the revolver and still didn't kill it.  

The "four hits" note isn't really a hard rule.  It might be the average for the other weapons, but it comes down to where you hit and the random chance of a critical hit, which is much higher with the rifle than other weapons.
