If you want to survive more than 200 days, you must use the forge. You will eventually run out of whetstones for sharpening your tools and the only way around is just to make new tools. You can stave this off by making fires with sticks and using the hacksaw wherever possible, but you will eventually run out of food.

And on Interloper you will have to use it very early in the game as axe and knife don't spawn and you won't last long otherwise. Which is why a lot of Interloper players complain it's a bit too linear.
