I assume your survivor is dead by now, but yeah Jack-diddly Island is over-hyped.  Quonset Garage is really the only worthwhile long term base in Coastal Highway.  It may be a wolf club, but there's usually a bear and sometimes a moose to compensate for the inconvenience.  Plus there's plenty of wood, cloth and sticks around so you can keep enough torches in stock until you're ready to deal with wolves in other ways like shooting or tanking them.
