"I'm guessing most did not think of this"  ...the start of every game says "your airplane is brought down by a geomagnetic storm." Virtually everyone thought of this.

Secondly, the Riken is a steam-ship. Its engines are run by a boiler, not electricity. This is why the forge belowdecks has a bunch of coal around it.
