Mackenzie: "There must be signs of Astrid around here somewhere."

CHAPTER TWO

ECHOES OF ASTRID

If Mackenzie walks up to the wreckage of his floatplane.

Mackenzie: "My plane...not sure which of us looks worse. Poor girl, this isn't how things were supposed to end."

Mackenzie then pilfers whatever is left of the crash site before leaving the area, and notices something caught on a tree branch fluttering in the wind. A piece of Astrid's scarf.

Mackenzie: "She definitely passed through here, and in a hurry."

He continues to follow the trail, and finds another piece of scarf. Eventually he comes to a pond full of rabbits and a tutorial message appears.

Aim True and You Won't Go Hungry

You can pick up small Stones and use them to Stun Rabbits. Equip them, and throw them to hit a Rabbit, then grab it while it's stunned. If you can kill it, you can eat it.

Mackenzie leaves the pond and finds a Rock Climb with another piece of Astrid's torn scarf

Mackenzie: "There must be a way to get up there."

Mackenzie finds some Old Man's Beard Lichen hanging on a tree with Astrid's scarf fragment and harvests it, prompting another tutorial message

Get Under Stuff

Occasionally you'll encounter an obstacle in your path. Crouching (using [L Ctrl]) might help to get under it. Crouching also makes you less obvious to wildlife, from a distance. You move more slowly, but also more silently, so you might get closer.

He crouches under it and finds a cave and enters it, prompting another tutorial messages

Light

Each Light Source has Pros and Cons

You may need to improvise Light Sources to see in the dark. you can Craft Torches out of available materials. Flares provide a one-off light source. Lanterns last longer, but use up Oil. Darkness hides dangers, and also prevents you from Crafting, Repairing your gear, and other actions.

After Mackenzie makes it through the cave and steps outside

Mackenzie: "Astrid...where did you go?"

A Wolf is feeding on a Deer Carcass ahead, prompting another tutorial message

Wolves

Avoid if You Can!

Wolves are not dogs and out here they are very dangerous. They normally avoid humans, but do you want to take a chance? Like most things in nature, Wolves are afraid of Fire. Campfires, Torches, or Flares can keep them at bay. Thrown Torches or Flares might scare them away. But there are no guarantees. In the end, the best way to avoid tangling with Wolves is to give them a wide berth.

Remember, they are attracted to Blood, Raw Meat, and Raw Fish. These items can also be used as Decoys to put Wolves off your trail.

Mackenzie sidesteps or scares the Wolf away, and eventually comes across a paved road

Mackenzie: "A road! Great. I'm not as lost as I thought."

Follow the road. Where does it go? And could Astrid have followed it?

Mackenzie finds several cars across a bridge and steps into one, prompting another tutorial message

Vehicles

Take Shelter

Cars can serve as shelters, protecting you from deadly wind and wildlife. You might even find supplies left inside the glove compartments or trunks.

A sign on the bridge says MILTON leading ahead, so Mackenzie continues to follow the road. As he crosses the bridge and keeps going, a Rabbit is attacked by a Wolf on the road. Using this as an opportunity to catch a rabbit for free, or just avoiding it, Mackenzie eventually passes by a Trailer and then St. Christopher's Church.

Mackenzie: "That church looks like it could be a good shelter."

Another Wolf is feasting on a Deer Carcass, and Mackenzie moves on. He eventually comes across another bridge, with a large sign saying TOWN OF MILTON EST 1911. He crosses the bridge and walks past the Milton Water Tower

Mackenzie: "Hello? Anyone out there?"

Getting no response, Mackenzie walks up further into town and begins seeing boarded up houses.

Mackenzie: "Hmph...this whole area looks like its been abandoned for awhile."

Mackenzie walks past a large house on a hill, with smoke bellowing from the chimney

Mackenzie: "Hmm...smoke from the chimney. Someone's home."

The big old house shows the first signs of habitation since you crashed. Investigate.

3rd Person Cutscene

Mackenzie walks up to the front door, as wolves from deeper in the town approach his location. He steps inside as a third person cutscene plays

Mackenzie: "Hello? Anybody here?

Mackenzie steps inside and peaks his head to his right, just as a bullet wizzes by and hits the wall behind him

Mackenzie: "Holy shi...wait...hold your fire!"

An old women in a chair is pointing a rifle at Mackenzie

Grey Mother: "Come closer, stranger."

Mackenzie: "Ok ok...just take it easy."

Mackenzie slowly walks towards the blindfolded women, who never points her aim away from the pilot

Grey Mother: "Why are you here?"

Mackenzie: "I saw the smoke from your chimney."

Grey Mother: "Mainlander?"

Mackenzie: "Uhh...What?"

The old women smirks and chuckles

Grey Mother: "Thought so. Mainlander. Outsider. I don't recognize your voice and you haven't left like the other cowards so...must be a Mainlander. Someone who doesn't know any better."

Mackenzie: "My plane...I crashed in the mountains nearby."

Grey Mother: "A likely story."

Mackenzie: "Listen...could you maybe point that gun someplace safe?"

Grey Mother: "You think because my eyes are covered, I can't see you? Make the wrong move, say the wrong thing...you'll see how good a shot I am."

Mackenzie: "I don't doubt it."

The women slowly lowers her rifle, aiming it away from Mackenzie and placing it in her lap. Her finger never leaving the trigger

Grey Mother: "The others, are all gone. If you're here, things must be worse than they thought."

Conversation

The cutscene ends as the camera switches between Mackenzie and the Old Women, as the sound of the wind makes the old house creek

Mackenzie (Text): "What is this place? This town?"

Grey Mother (Text): "This is Milton. A small town in the mountains. You're far from home."

Mackenzie (Text): "But...where are we on Great Bear? My plane came down in bad weather, and..."

Grey Mother (Text): "You're wherever you're supposed to be, Outsider. The Maker in his great wisdom has put you here with me. But what is his purpose? What is yours?"

Mackenzie (Text): "I'm looking for someone. She crashed with me, but I think she walked out...would have been when the lights first appeared."

Grey Mother (Text): "I'm not interested in your story, Outsider. I'm cold. Prove your worth to me and I'll think about telling you what I know. My fire will be out soon. Fetch me some firewood, and then maybe we'll talk more."

A dialogue compass appears offering more choices to speak with the women.

  • WHO ARE YOU?

Mackenzie (Text): "My name's Mackenzie. And you are..."

Grey Mother (Text): "The liars call me Grey Mother."

Mackenzie (Text): "So...I should..."

Grey Mother (Text): "You should call me Grey Mother also."

Mackenzie (Text): "Right. So...if everyone left, why are you still here?"

Grey Mother (Text): "They're afraid of me. And even if I could leave, I wouldn't. I was born here. I'll die here. This is the way it has to be."

Mackenzie (Text): "The way it has to be?"

Grey Mother (Text): "You wouldn't understand loyalty, Mainlander."

  • OTHERS?

Mackenzie (Text): "You said everyone is gone, what happened here?"

Grey Mother (Text): "Five days since the lights in the sky. Five days of hell. First they thought they'd be safe and then they realized - - they weren't ready for the end. Then they fled. None of them will make it."

Mackenzie (Text): "How do you know? I mean...you can't..."

Grey Mother (Text): "See? No, I can't. But I know what I hear. Sooner or later all their words, all their lies, find their way up to me."

  • FUEL?

Mackenzie (Text): "So...fuel. Where can I find some?"

Grey Mother (Text): "Surely a big strapping man like you can find some firewood in a forest."

Mackenzie (Text): "Right."

Grey Mother (Text): "Take the axe in the woodshed out back, if you must. I know some of the townsfolks cut wood on the edge of town."

Mackenzie (Text): "I'll be back."

  • HOUSE?

Mackenzie (Text): "This is a big house. You live here by yourself?"

Grey Mother (Text): "None of your business, Outsider. Just stay out of my private things and don't try to steal from me. Or you'll never find out what I know about your...friend."

  • FINISHED

Once the player selects this option, the final conversation plays

Grey Mother (Text): "Come back when you've sorted out my firewood situation, if you come back at all."

Another tutorial message pops up
