There are a number of named lakes and ponds of various sizes present on Great Bear Island. Some of them are very small, such as Pensive Pond in Pleasant Valley, while others are quite large, such as Monolith Lake in Hushed River Valley. Generally, lakes on Great Bear are frozen over, due to the cold winter temperatures.
While the lack of vegetation and the relative openness makes it easy to spot predators from far off, dense fog or blizzards can increase the risk of getting disoriented due to the lack of any features. An important note to keep in mind, most lakes and ponds are deep enough for Free Form Ice Fishing.
