You should expect tons of wolves in Coastal Highway, especially on Stalker. I've had no problems with wolves, because you can craft up torches to scare them off if you don't have any flares. Also, the Quonset Gas Station is a HORRIBLE choice for a base imo.

For me, the best base in Coastal Highway is the house on Jackrabbit Island. There's no wolves nearby it, it has lots of storage space, and there's a fishing hut nearby for cooking and fishing. And if you ever need to use the workbench, you can make a quick walk over to the log sort, even though the workbench there is outside.
