CHAPTER TWO

FALLEN STAR

Astrid begins diagnosing the Crash Survivors on the floor. Upon diagnosing one of them, Astrid will say one of the following lines:

  • Astrid: "Let me have a look, OK?"
  • Astrid: "Easy, I'm just gonna see if I can help."
  • Astrid: "Hmm, I'll see if I can help."
  • Astrid: "Let's see what's wrong here."
  • Astrid: "This might be serious."
  • Astrid: "I'm going to check you over."

Astrid kneels down to many of the survivors, checking temperature by placing the back of her palm on some of the survivor's foreheads, while merely looking at others. Most survivors are in good shape, and do not need attention. One survivor however has a Diabetes bracelet, and is suffering from Hyperglycemic Risk.

After diagnosing all the survivors, Astrid returns to speak with Father Thomas

Astrid: "I've had a look at the survivors. Most are in fairly good condition, given the circumstances."

Father Thomas: "These were the lucky ones. You'll find the ones who were less fortunate in the basement." Father Thomas takes his glasses off "May God take mercy on their souls. They died from their injuries, or were found dead." He puts his glasses back on "We put them downstairs to keep the bodies cold, and also...well, there are wolves around, you see."

Astrid approaches Father Thomas and puts her right hand on his left shoulder,

Astrid: "Yes, I've seen them. I think I can find most of what these survivors need. But there is a diabetic in the group." Astrid gestures to Dimitri "They're going to need insulin, and soon. Do you know where I might find some?"

Father Thomas: "That's bad news...no, I don't."

Astrid: "This survivor has type-1 Diabetes. That means their body can't produce insulin. If they don't get it, they'll go into shock...and probably die."

Father Thomas: "Well, then we need to find some. And soon, before the blizzard becomes too powerful to even risk going outside. I need to remain with the survivors, minister to them, but you...you can go and look for the medicine they need."

Astrid: "I will. Any suggestions you have would be very useful."

Father Thomas: "Most of the surrounding houses will be empty, but you may find some minor supplies you need to treat the survivors. The diabetic came in from the plane crash...a day, maybe two days ago. So...your best chance to find their insulin will probably be to find their luggage. At the crash site."

Astrid: "How will I know which luggage is theirs?"

Father Thomas: "You'll have to search everything you find, and hope for the best."

Astrid: "Ok. You keep an eye on everyone and I'll be back as soon as I can."

Father Thomas: "Thank you for your help."

Astrid begins to walk out the front doors

Father Thomas: "One more thing..."

Astrid turns around and walks back to Father Thomas

Astrid: "Yes?"

Father Thomas: "Many of these survivors are in bad shape. From the crash, it's true. But I've seen this sort of thing before. People need hope to survive. And if they can't have hope, they need some closure. People here...many of them weren't traveling alone. They're broken-hearted, worried sick about their loved ones. Feeling guilty....why did they survive when others didn't? You can help them find closure. But chances are, searching the crash site won't be a pleasant experience."

Astrid: "I've seen death before."

Father Thomas: "Yes, you're a doctor so you understand the fragility of human life. The fragility of the human spirit is more my domain. For the ones who've lost loved ones...if you could bring them some closure, that will help to start their healing process."

Astrid: "Yes. It's well known that the mind and body are inextricably linked."

Father Thomas: "If you encounter any artifacts...any information that would help to identify those who did not survive the crash...that information might be a salve to these poor broken souls. Then perhaps they'll have a chance to face tomorrow."

Astrid: "I'll do what I can to find IDs...documents...anything that can help identify the people who didn't make it."

Father Thomas: "In turn, take this, my child."

Father Thomas produces a Rosary and tries to hand it to Astrid

Astrid: "Oh um...I'm...I'm not religious. Please, keep it."

Father Thomas: "It's not for you. Please, humour me."

Father Thomas places the Rosary in Astrid's hand

Astrid: "I...I don't understand."

Father Thomas: "At least until I can minister to those souls myself, having you carry this rosary while you investigate the crash site...it would bring an old priest some comfort. It will be the closest thing to my being able to pray for them."

Astrid: "I mean no disrespect, Father, but do you really believe this will help?"

Father Thomas: "Perhaps in the end, faith is all we have."

Locate the downed airliner.

Just as Astrid is about to leave the Community Hall, a phone rings at the entrance. Astrid picks it up.

Molly: "So...you're still alive."

Astrid: "So far, yeah. But there are people in town who won't be if I don't get going."

Molly: "You heading up to the plane crash?"

Astrid: "How'd you know that?"

Molly: "You risked your life to come here to help some sick people. You came to help me when I was stuck in the barn. You're a doctor. You're not going to leave a bunch of crash survivors to die in the cold."

Astrid: "I would like to help the crash victims, yes."

Molly: Sighs "I wouldn't get your hopes up. A few days in this weather, and with the wolves prowling...doubt you'll find anyone alive out there."

Astrid: "Let's hope you're wrong."

Molly: "Yeah, well...I left you a little present."

Astrid: "Look, I'm not sure..."

Molly: "Relax. You have to trust someone, right?"

Astrid: "Would you trust someone with a dead body in their basement?'

Molly: "Fair point. But if you want to live, check out the trunk of that blue sedan, over by the swing set."

Astrid: "Well...ok. Thanks I guess."

Molly: "Watch out for those wolves."

Molly hangs up, and Astrid puts the Receiver away

Astrid walks outside of the Community Hall, the weather having gone from light snow to a clear evening. All of a sudden a prolonged howl rings out around her.

Astrid: "That can't be good..."

A Timberwolf pack attacks her, and she has a variety of reactions to the situation as the battle goes on

  • Astrid: "Think, Astrid, think."
  • Astrid: "Wha?"

Eventually she drives them off, killing or causing the pack to flee in terror, and travels to the blue sedan Molly mentioned. She finds several marine flares, useful for keeping Timberwolves at bay.

Astrid: "Some more help from Molly. Let's hope these work."

Astrid then turns and sees a bright fire and smoke ball in the mountains, the crashed plane. She begins her lengthy journey to the crash site. Halfway to the liner, another earthquake hits the region

Astrid: "What the..."

The quake subsides after a few moments, and Astrid carries on. She eventually sees the front of the crashed plane, still burning after all this time. She opens the lower hatch door and steps inside, walking to the back of the plane only for the platform she is standing on to collapse. She stops to bask in the destruction before her, with the plane split into 3 parts with several dead bodies and suitcases strewn all around like ragdolls. Crows fly noisily over the frozen corpses.

Astrid: "Hard to believe anyone survived this. Now to find that insulin."

Find the passenger IDs. [0/10] Find Insulin for Dimitri.

Astrid begins searching for IDs on the first of the bodies, the skin frozen purple by now.

Astrid: "These poor people...nothing but wreckage."

She continues searching for IDs and Dimitri's Insulin until she finally arrives at the tail section, where she finds the body of one of the plane's crew with a manifest.

Astrid: "Looks like the plane's passenger manifest."

She finally reaches the tail section, and a single crow perches nearby before flying away when approaches. Astrid finds a suitcase with a name on it "Suitcase belonging to Dimitri S." and finds the Insulin inside

Astrid: "Found it!"

Just then, a slight moan comes out from nearby. A survivor is pinned under a seat

Astrid: "Oh god...oh god. You're alive!"

Astrid pushes the seat off of the women. The women's leg is bloody, with large amounts of blood in the snow

Gwen: "Help...me..."

The survivor shivers, and stares at her savior for a moment before Astrid grabs the back of her head and checks her neck for a pulse. The women's face and lips are purple.

Astrid: "I'm here. I'm here to help."

Gwen: "Please...it hurts. Make it stop."

Astrid: "You've been in a crash. You're in shock. But...I can help you. Just let me start a fire..."

Gwen: "Too far gone."

Astrid: "You've lost a lot of blood. And...you have frostbite. But it's ok...it's going to be ok. I'm a doctor. I can help you."

Gwen: "Please...I want this to be over."

The screen fades to black as Astrid grabs the women's hands, and a flashback begins. Astrid is in a lab, putting blood samples in a centrifuge. She grabs her ID card and moves it out of the way (ID badge has Seraphim Sleep Research Centre on it) before looking over a sheet of paper with data on it.

Astrid: "Huh...interesting. I wonder..."

A phone rings and Astrid goes to answer it

Astrid: "Damn it..." Answers the phone "Sleep Research Centre. Doctor Greenwood speaking."

Astrid's Friend: "Did you get it?"

Astrid looks over her desk in fear

Astrid: "I told you not to call here."

Astrid's Friend: "I'm sorry...but...I'm scared."

Astrid holds the phone close to her mouth and covers it with her hands

Astrid: "I am working on it."

Astrid's Friend: "It's getting worse. We have to do something."

Astrid: "I'm going as fast as I can."

Astrid's Friend: "You said you'd help. You said you had something that could help her."

Astrid: "I can't just...it is in a secure area of the lab. I can't just walk out with it. There's security protocols and..."

Astrid's Friend: "Astrid...it's getting worse. You have to do something. You understand that better than anyone."

Astrid: "Yes. I do."

Astrid's Friend: "Find a way. And get up here as soon as you can."

Astrid: "I...I will. As soon as I can figure out how to... I'll find a way to get it to you."

Astrid's Friend: "Have you asked Will?"

Astrid: "N...no. It's been years since we..."

Astrid looks at her wedding band

Astrid: "I haven't asked him yet.

Astrid's Friend: "I don't have time for this, Astrid. You need to do this, and soon."

Astrid: "I will. I'll fix it. I promise I will get there."

Astrid's Friend: "I'm afraid it's happening again Astrid. I'm afraid we'll lose her this time."

Astrid: "That's not gonna happen."

Astrid's Friend: "Hurry, Astrid."

The phone call and flashback ends, and the scene returns to the present with Astrid and Gwen.

Astrid: "I'm sorry...I'm so sorry. I know you're in pain...and you just want it all to end. But I won't let you die out here."

Bring Gwen to the Community Hall.

Having found the Insulin and all the IDs, Astrid treats Gwen's Blood Loss and picks her up. Gwen and Astrid may say many lines regarding their situation, which can be found here: Survivor Monologue

Gwen is dangerously cold, and Astrid starts the journey of carrying her back to the Community Hall. Astrid carries Gwen to Burned Ridge Cave and puts her down, then starts a fire to warm her up, and diagnoses her. After warming up and making it out of the cave, then later traveling down the mountain and across a tree bridge, a Receiver rings inside an abandoned, destroyed house. Astrid puts Gwen down and answers it

Astrid: "Hello?"

Molly: "Me again."

Astrid: "What...how did you know I was here?"

Molly: "Party line's a funny thing. All the calls go to every phone in the area. All I have to do is wait for you to pick up."

Astrid: "Um, what do you want, Molly? I'm kinda busy."

Molly: "Yeah. I saw you found a survivor at the crash site."

Astrid: "You spying on me?"

Molly: "Just watching. Curious."

Astrid: " 'Kay, that's kinda creepy."

Molly: "You want to tell me what happened to your man?"

Astrid: "I don't really have time for this right now, Molly."

Molly: "I'll go first. You asked about my husband, when we were in the house. Not much to tell, really. He's dead. I'm alive."

Astrid: "Sorry if this sounds harsh but...you don't seem too broken up about it."

Molly: "I'm not."

Astrid: "I assume he's the one in the basement. Did you kill him?"

Molly: "You tell me. Is failing to help someone the same as killing them?"

Astrid: "I guess that depends on the circumstances. And the intent."

Molly: Chuckles "Now you sound like a lawyer."

Astrid: "Did you kill him?"

Molly: "The wolves killed him. But my intent was for him to die."

The line goes dead, and Astrid hangs up the phone. She grabs Gwen and resumes the journey back to the Community Hall. A group of Timberwolves soon attack the two, but Astrid drives them off, and eventually carries Gwen to the Community Hall. Astrid makes it inside, and places Gwen on a bed.

Gwen: "Thank you..."

Astrid then tends to Dimitri, rubbing the bottle of Insulin and filling the syringe with it, then injecting him with a dose. Astrid then walks to each of the survivors, handing the IDs to 9 of the 12 of them. Of the ones she gives IDs to, Astrid says these lines

  • Astrid: "I'm sorry...I found her. She didn't survive."
  • Astrid: "He was lost in the crash."
  • Astrid: "He didn't' survive."
  • Astrid: "I'm sorry...I found her. She...she didn't make it."
  • Astrid: "He...didn't survive the crash."
  • Astrid: "I'm sorry...I found her. She didn't survive the crash. I'm so sorry."
  • Astrid: "I'm sorry...I found her. She was lost in the crash."
  • Astrid: "He didn't make it through the crash."

Astrid then speaks to Maude, about how she couldn't find the bodies of their friends.

  • Astrid: "I'm sorry, I couldn't find them."
  • Astrid: "I'm sorry...I couldn't find who you were looking for. I hope they survived, and they're safe somewhere."

These survivors have a response afterwards.

  • Maude: "Please look for them..."
  • Nolan: "Please find them..."
  • Eric: "Find them...please."

Talk to Father Thomas.

Father Thomas: "You made it. I prayed that you would."

Astrid: "Yes, I made it. And I found another survivor. In bad shape, though. Found the insulin too."

Father Thomas: "Thank you my child. This is a big help. The weather's turning worse. I fear another blizzard is on the way."

Astrid: "How can you tell?"

Father Thomas: "The farmers of Pleasant Valley have been part of my flock for years now. Over that time, you start to see the patterns of things. Blizzards are common this time of year. We're due for another one, any day now."

Astrid: "And then what?"

Father Thomas: "Normally, we'd hunker down with a stack of firewood, a full pantry, and wait it out."

Astrid: "And now?"

Father Thomas: "Even with what you've done, we'll have to pray we survive long enough for the weather to clear."

Astrid: "Prayer's your thing, Father. You handle that. Between the plane crash and the houses in the area, I'm going to pull together whatever supplies I can find. Maybe between the two of us, we can keep these people alive."

Father Thomas: "May God watch over you, my child."
