You've got it completely backwards. Gauntlets have better protection and mobility, but both stats are irrelevant compared to the worse waterproofing, and hunting four Rabbits is definitely WAY easier than finding a pair of gauntlets, Rabbits are incredibly easy to hunt. The main thing though is the decay values, Rabbitskin Mittens last for months and can be repaired with renewable resources, while Gauntlets don't last as long and require rare Leather to repair.
