Opening
CHAPTER FOUR
DONNER
Mackenzie is back in his prison cell, with Vachon, and Heller standing outside. Mathis is in the cell with Mackenzie. The lights in the building are on, powered by the aurora
Mathis: "So...here we are again."
Mackenzie: "Yeah...we have to stop meeting like this. Me, tied to a chair. You, acting crazy."
Mathis stops pacing back and forth and silently glares at Mackenzie for a moment
Mathis: "The problem I have, pilot. Is that you keep lying to me."
Mackenzie: "I...don't know what you mean."
Mathis: "You see...that's exactly the kind of thing that...PISSES ME OFF. First, you pretend not to know anything about the case."
Mackenzie: "I really don't..."
Mathis: "Then, you go around behind my back, purposely trying to mess up my plans. With...an accomplice."
Mackenzie: "Mathis, I..."
Mathis: "SHUT YOUR MOUTH. All I hear are lies. I know...everything."
A convict pushes a stretcher carrying the corpse of Franklin down the hall
Mackenzie: "You monster. He didn't do anything."
Mathis: "I know! He was so innocent. Just one of the "good guys". But he sang like a bird when we laid into him. He couldn't give you and your friend up quickly enough."
Mathis pulls the valve handle out from behind his back
Mathis: "I know about your pathetic activities to slow me down, Mackenzie. It makes me laugh because...the only reason I kept you alive, was I thought you could fly us out of here. Back to the Mainland. But, I'm starting to understand that here...here...we can be kings. Back there is nothing but fire and cold. The old world. My crew and I...we're going to rule Great Bear. Nobody can stop us. Not you, not your friend, nothing. We aren't going anywhere. So you've outlived your usefulness to me, pilot. And when I'm done with you, I'm going after your little helper."
Mathis winds up his arm and is about to strike Mackenzie with the valve handle, yelling, until an explosion rings out knocking him over. He rushes out, with Vachon and Heller following. Mackenzie struggles for a moment, but gets off the floor
Mackenzie: "What the hell is going on?"
Smoke fill the hallway, as Mackenzie is finally able to freely explore the inside of the Prison. He comes to an intersection where he sees Mathis standing amongst the burning, smoking ruins of the Prison with the corpses of two convicts next to him, an alarm blaring around them. He turns around as Mackenzie slowly approaches
Mathis: "What happened?"
Heller stands amongst the flames
Heller: "The detonators...they blew too early. Something happened. The guys fucked it up."
Mathis: "You...assholes. Solitary?"
Heller: "They're clearing the rubble. Can't see shit for all the smoke right now. There's fire...everywhere."
Heller walks off and Mathis turns around
Mathis: "I suppose you're pleased with yourself. You'd better hope nothing's happened to my..."
As Mathis walks to Mackenzie, a loudspeaker turns on
Jace: "Greetings, convict assholes. This is your friendly neighbourhood prison hacker checking in to say...it's lockdown time."
Mathis charges Mackenzie before a rolling door slides in front of him. Mathis grabs Mackenzie's sweater through the bars
Mathis: "MACKENZE!!!!! I am going to destroy everything you love."
Without another word, Mathis firmly lets go of Mackenzie and walks off
Jace: "Uhh...Mack. Whatever you're going to do, you'd better do it soon."
Mackenzie: "The Warden's office. Hardcase."
Mackenzie struggles to make his way through the prison as smoke fills his lungs and parts of the ceiling collapse around him. Eventually he makes it to a room with clean air. The door saying Warden's Office
Mackenzie: "Made it."
He finds the Warden's office
Mackenzie: "The Hardcase."
He picks up Astrid's Hardcase
Mackenzie: "This damn thing...so much trouble."
A Phone nearby starts to ring. He picks it up, overlooking the Prison Yard as powered spotlights search the Yard under the aurora
Mackenzie: "I'm here."
Jace: "You made it to the Warden's office? Good. You better get what you need and get the hell out of there. Quick."
Mackenzie: "Did you cause that explosion?"
Jace: "I might have nudged it a bit. But mostly those idiot convicts did it to themselves. The PA and lockdown, however. That was all me."
Mackenzie: "I have the case."
Jace: "Ok... Hang on a sec... Ok! Here we are. Warden's office... Ok, so...end of the hallway you just came out of. Take it. You'll end up on the roof. Cross over the building and you'll find a fire escape thingy. Come down there, and you should recognize where you are. I'll meet you at the power plant."
Mackenzie: "I can see...lights in the prison yard. Fire."
Jace: "You'd better hurry. The whole security system has gone haywire and I have no idea how long the lockdown will last. Mathis and Donner could be after you in a minute. GO GO GO."
Mackenzie hangs up and prepares to run across the rooftops
Mackenzie: "Got to move."
The sound of banging comes from the door near the emergency exit to the roof as Vachon attempts to break the door down
- Vachon: "Can't hide forever!"
- Vachon: "Break it down!"
- Vachon: "Hit it again!"
- Vachon: "Open up!"
- Vachon: "One more time!"
- Vachon: "Smash the thing!"
Mackenzie goes out the roof door and grabs a chair, wedging it in the emergency exit door to buy himself time. If the player waits too long, the convicts will bust through and cause an immediate game over. As Mackenzie runs across the rooftops and the yard, yelling can be heard
- Heller: "Don't let him get by!"
- Heller: "Find him!!"
- Heller: "Don't let him slip through!"
- Vachon: "Do you see him?"
- Vachon: "Where is he?!"
- Vachon: "Move the damn light!"
- Convict: "Don't let him get by!"
- Convict: "Don't let him slip through!"
- Convict: "Where is he!?"
- Convict: "Can you see him!?"
- Convict: "Move the damn light!"
- Convict: "Find him!!"
Mackenzie: "Jace said over, then down."
Mackenzie crosses the rooftops and hears more banging on another door as he reaches the fire escape
Mackenzie: "Can't let them find me."
Mathis is attempting to break down the door
- Mathis: "Break it down!"
- Mathis: "Smash it you idiots!"
Mackenzie takes a yellow plank and slams it into the door to slow the Convicts down, then jumps down the fire escape
Mackenzie: "Have to stay out of sight."
Convicts can be seen manning spotlights in the Yard and carrying Revolvers, ready to shoot Mackenzie on sight. He blends into the shadows and avoids the lights as he makes his way to the Steam Tunnels door. If Mackenzie is spotted, the convicts take a shot. As the player moves through the yard, the voices in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th guard towers change
- Convict: "I see him moving!"
- Convict: "Dog's on the run!"
- Convict: "He's out there!"
- Convict: "Payback time!"
- Convict: "You can't run, pilot!"
- Convict: "Run, dog!"
- Convict: "We're gonna lose him!"
- Convict: "We're gonna find you, pilot!"
- Heller: "Something over there!"
- Heller: "You can't run, pilot!"
- Heller: "We're gonna clip your wings now, pilot!"
- Heller: "Light him up!"
- Heller: "Over there!"
- Heller: "He's moving!"
- Heller: "I've got him!"
- Vachon: "I see him!"
- Vachon: "There's nowhere to go!"
- Vachon: "You can't run!"
- Vachon: "He's over there!"
- Vachon: "You're wasting your time, dog!"
- Vachon: "You can't run, pilot!"
- Mathis: "He's in the yard!"
- Mathis: "Use the lights!"
- Mathis: "Move the light!"
- Mathis: "Find that dog!"
- Mathis: "Take a shot!"
- Mathis: "He's getting away!"
- Mathis: "Put the light on him!"
- Mathis: "Take him down!"
- Mathis: "Shoot him!"
- Mathis: "Down there!"
- Mathis: "Faster, you idiots!"
- Mathis: "Take his head off!"
Once Mackenzie reaches the door to the Steam Tunnels, if the player walks to the parking lot area past the door then Mackenzie says
Mackenzie: "That's not the right way."
Mackenzie eventually makes it to the Steam Tunnels, and blocks the door with another chair. The tunnels are destroyed, with steam pipes lying everywhere after the explosion, forcing Mackenzie to duck under fallen pipes and dodge lethal steam jets. After running through a smoke filled portion of the tunnels, he finally makes it to the plant and finally meets Jace
Mackenzie: "Ummm...hi?"
Jace: "Relax, Mack. It's me. Jace."
Mackenzie: "Right. Well...you ok?"
Jace: "Yeah, I'm ok. Thanks for your help back there."
Mackenzie: "Thanks for yours."
Jace: "That was one hell of an explosion, huh?"
Mackenzie: "Yeah. I'm trying to figure out what happened there."
Jace: "Well...I might just have had a little bit to do with that."
Mackenzie: "You should have seen Mathis' face."
Jace: "Ha! That guy had it coming to him."
Mackenzie: "Could you...see what was going on?"
Jace: "Hacked into the security cameras across the prison. That's how I was able to keep an eye on you and...the rest of it."
Mackenzie: "Well...what now?"
Jace: "Yeah, I mean. This is as far as my plan went. You have any ideas?"
Mackenzie: "We have to get to Atwood."
Jace: "I still don't get it, but yeah we do. I'm worried about her, with all this going on. She's...fragile."
Mackenzie: "Ok, well..."
Knocking is heard on the Power Plant doors
Jace: "Shit! They found us. That was faster than I expected."
Mackenzie: "Ok well, uh...you have the blueprints, right? How do we get out of here?"
Jace: "I dunno? This was the extent of my plan, Mackenzie. Isn't this prison escape gig more your thing?"
Mackenzie: "There has to be another way out."
Jace: "Shit. Trapped. This is not how I thought this would end. And things were just starting to look up."
Mackenzie looks into the churning water below
Mackenzie: "Ok, whatever happens..."
Mathis and his gang have broken into the Power Plant, with the convict leader stepping forward with a Hatchet in his hand
Mathis: "You're like a bad penny, Mackenzie."
Mackenzie: "I've been called worse."
Mathis: "You know, it's amazing to me that a smartass like you has made it this far."
Mackenzie: "Like I've always told you. You have no idea how stubborn I am."
Mathis: "Too bad being stubborn isn't the same as being smart. And this must be the fly in the ointment. A girl, no less. This is the end of the line for you and your friend, pilot."
Jace: "I'm not afraid of you, asshole. I've been fighting guys like you all my damn life."
Mathis: "Well, today you lose, in more ways than one, girl."
Mathis steps down the stairs as Heller arrives behind him
Heller: "Mathis."
Mathis: "What is it!?"
Heller: "Donner. The explosion...he's hurt bad."
Mathis: "This wouldn't have happened...if not for you. You've been a pain in my ass for too long, pilot. It's time for the bad penny to pay the ultimate price. But first, you can watch me deal with the girl."
Mathis charges with the Hatchet as Mackenzie shoves him back into the railing. He gets in close but Mathis smacks him away
Mathis: "Good. I like them to struggle before they die."
Mathis swings the Hatchet, but Mackenzie grabs it and the two struggle before Mathis is punched in the face and sent flying back
Mathis: "YES!! That's what I like to see, Mackenzie. A little fight. A little will to live. I knew you had it in you."
Mathis strikes and Mackenzie dodges the Hatchet before he is punched in the stomach
Heller: "Mathis. MATHIS. He's dying. Donner is...dying."
Mathis: "Wha..."
Mathis goes into a blind rage, grabbing Mackenzie and throwing him onto a power console. He swings the Hatchet but Mackenzie grabs it and Mathis' face. The two struggle before Jace kicks Mathis in the left knee, breaking his hold on Mackenzie. The pilot then pushes Mathis away
Mathis: "OOF."
Mackenzie rushes Jace, and the two go over a broken railing into the river below as they are washed onto a shore down stream. Mackenzie grabs a root and pulls Jace and himself onto the shore, as Jace coughs up water. The two get up, shivering
Jace: "Wasn't expecting that."
Mackenzie: "Seemed like a good idea at the time."
Mackenzie looks back as the aurora hums in the sky. In the distance, Blackrock Prison burns a hellish orange glow
Mackenzie: "Looks like Blackrock's on fire."
Jace shivers in the cold
Jace: "Huh. It actually looks...warm. first time I've missed the place."
Mackenzie: "Hey...hey. Hang in there. I'll get a fire going. You'll be warm in no time."
Jace: "It's...ok. I'm warming up."
Mackenzie: "That is not a good sign, Jace. Just...just wait. Hang in there. It'll be fine. Everything is going to be fine."
Jace: "You know...Mathis...he'll just ...c'c...come after us. He'll never...stop."
Mackenzie: "Yeah. Neither will we."
The scene fades to black. A post credits scene plays of a canoe sailing through the sea. Waves rock is and an Orca blows air from its blowhole. The canoe eventually reaches the docks of Perseverance Mills, as the aurora fills the sky and a single crow caws at the canoe. The camera pans inside the canoe to show Astrid inside. As dawn breaks some time later, she coughs and looks out and sees two men approach her
Townsperson One: "Another one! In the water!"
Townsperson Two: "But not drowned like the others."
Townsperson One: "Must not be a quarantine breaker then?"
The two men crouch over Astrid as a voice rings out from afar
Jane Yang: "Is it another one?"
Townsperson One: "This one is different."
A women approaches the canoe and is shocked to see who is inside
Jane Yang: "It can't be..."
The women places her hand on Astrid's forehead
Townsperson Two: "Watch it. Might be infected..."
Jane Yang: "No, not her."
The women gets up and looks around the canoe
Jane Yang: "...where is it..."
The women paces back and forth around the dock, searching all over the canoe for something
Astrid: "Need...water."
Townsperson Two: "She doesn't look good..."
Jane Yang: "Get her some water. Now."
The man walks off as the women faces Astrid
Jane Yang: "Astrid. You came. You said you would, and you did. But where is the case? Where's the cure?"
