check out the page of "Decay", certain food is best stored outside, while a few inside.  Also read about the part concerning food poisoning, certain item will never give you affliction, so you can safely let them decay, like soda and crackers.  You can drink soda even when it's ruined.  note: if you put any ruined item into any kind of container, including corpses, it will disappear.
