In the current version of the game, you are best off starting a fire with sticks, then adding cedar/fir later. Given that even a moderate fire is enough to prevent frosbite, and that keeping a fire burning long enough is the greatest danger of blizzards, cedar/reclaimed wood is much better than fir.
