I just had a really close encounter with a bear twice in Coastal Highway. Once at the Fishing Huts, and another at the gas station. But yes, they do have a chance of wandering really close to where you are. I'd just sit and wait for 2-4 hours (use this time to repair clothing or sleep) Then crouch and go outside, keep your ears open for crows or bear noises. Then tenatively look around. If no bear, continue cautiously. If bear, go back inside and rinse + repeat. Good luck!
