There's a Firewood Bin outside Grey Mother's house. Stock it with fuel you find around town -- Sticks, Firewood, broken down furniture, or Coal if you can find any.

CHAPTER THREE

THE GREY MOTHER

Mackenzie sets out to find fuel for Grey Mother's fire. Eventually he finds 24 hours worth of fuel and puts it in Grey Mother's firewood bin, prompting another tutorial message

Mackenzie walks inside and triggers a cutscene

3rd Person Cutscene

Grey Mother claps slowly as Mackenzie walks in and stands in front of a chair that was not there before. Grey Mother laughs in amusement

Grey Mother: "So, the Outsider returns! You're already doing better than the others. You've found the fuel, but did you find any answers?"

Mackenzie: "All I've found are wolves, bad weather, and an empty town."

Grey Mother: "It's just as I told you. They're all gone."

The cutscene ends as the player stands over Grey Mother. The message "GREY MOTHER NOW TRUSTS YOU MORE NOW. (+5)" appears. Talking to her triggers another 3rd person cutscene

Mackenzie: "What really happened here? Seems like people where here recently. Where did they go? Why didn't they just call for help or...just drive out?"

Grey Mother: "The power went out. Who knows the reason. People started to get cold, hungry. They panicked. Started to talk crazy. Others walked here from the highway...some, belonged here. Others, were Outsiders like you."

Mackenzie: "Did anyone see a women? Brown hair, would have had a tan jacket...scarf with...birds on it. Possibly injured."

Grey Mother: "There was an Outsider women. I heard her pass through. She wasn't alone. There were angry voices, and...but the storm was so loud."

Mackenzie: "Voices?"

Grey Mother: "I lost the voices and I couldn't get them back. Nevermind. You did well with the fuel. Now, do the same with food. Or I won't last the winter."

A dialogue compass appears as the cutscene ends

  • HELP COMING?

Mackenzie (Text): "Surely...someone will come looking. Someone will send help. Search and rescue? The military? The government?"

Grey Mother (Text): "To Milton? No."

Mackenzie (Text): "You don't think help is coming?"

Grey Mother (Text): "We needed help ten years ago. During the Collapse. When you Mainlanders were sitting pretty, and the others raped our Island. Took what they wanted. We needed help ten years ago, and it didn't come then. Why would it come now?"

Mackenzie (Text): "That was a long time ago. Things are different now."

Grey Mother (Text): "Ha! Not for us. Not for Great Bear. And not for Grey Mother."

  • OTHERS?

Mackenzie (Text): "Is there anyone else left in town?"

Grey Mother (Text): "After the lights went out...a blizzard blew in. People got scared. Were afraid of being trapped. Or...more trapped. They panicked. Some left to see what they could discover from the outside."

Mackenzie (Text): "And...what did they find out?"

Grey Mother (Text): "They didn't come back."

  • MAINLANDER?

Mackenzie (Text): "You keep calling me Mainlander. Why?"

Grey Mother (Text): "You're an outsider. Mainlander. You're one of them. You don't belong here."

Mackenzie (Text): "Right...but I mean...you sound angry about it."

Grey Mother (Text): "Years ago, when the Collapse happened...we lost everything. The young people didn't understand how dependent we'd become. Some people may have accepted dependence on the Mainland. But I don't want the scraps from your table."

Mackenzie (Text): "Guess I don't know that much...about the history."

Grey Mother (Text): "I'm not surprised. You Mainlanders have always been focused on your own story."

  • PANTRY?

Mackenzie (Text): "So...I hate to ask, but...food."

Grey Mother (Text): "The town...it's abandoned. They've left me to starve. I'll need food to survive this."

Mackenzie (Text): "Survive until...what?"

Grey Mother (Text): "I'll worry about that. You worry about finding me food to keep me alive."

Mackenzie (Text): "But...what if people come back? Won't I be taking what they need to survive?"

Grey Mother (Text): "You mean...stealing? Maybe so. But it's fair. They stole from me all those years ago and now it's their turn."

Mackenzie (Text): "What did they steal from you?"

Grey Mother (Text): "Nevermind that! Find me food. Ransack the gas station on the edge of town. There's always food there. Owner has a "special supplier" from the Mainland. You're a Mainlander so stealing should come naturally. Or...if you're feeling guilty...bring me only what Nature has to offer. It'll be more work but maybe you'll sleep better at night."

Mackenzie (Text): "I'll...see what I can do."

Grey Mother (Text): "Take the Prybar from the shed, if you haven't already. You might need it to get into some of the more...stubborn...places."

  • ANGRY VOICES?

Mackenzie (Text): "Can you tell me more about the angry voices you heard?'

Grey Mother (Text): "It was...windy. The blizzard was already waking up. But I heard yelling. A scream. Later, I heard from the gossips that someone had passed through the town in the night. More than one person. A women, and some men. One of the men was found..."

Mackenzie (Text): "Found?"

Grey Mother (Text): "They found him dead the next morning."

Mackenzie (Text): "And the women? The one whose voice you heard?"

Grey Mother (Text): "I'm not sure. The voices were...thin. Far. The blizzard was waking up. Soon there was only wind and...darkness."

Mackenzie (Text): "The scream...could it have been the women?"

Grey Mother (Text): "I don't know. I don't remember. It's all cloudy now."

  • SUPPLIES?

Mackenzie (Text): "A town like Milton - - where do supplies come from?"

Grey Mother (Text): "The Mainland, of course. Where else?'

Mackenzie (Text): "I don't know. Local stuff. Farms? Producers on the Island?"

Grey Mother (Text): "Those days are in the past. We became dependent on the Mainland just like you wanted us to. Then, when things Collapsed...you cut us off. Until you found things you could take, things you could sell to...the others. The ones in the South. Some tried farming, but..."

Mackenzie (Text): "Times were hard for everyone back then. Still are. You aren't the only ones to have suffered. In the cities..."

Grey Mother (Text): "Bah! The cities. You got what you deserved. You'll get no sympathy from Grey Mother."

  • OUTSIDERS?

Mackenzie (Text): "You said there were others. Other...outsiders?"

Grey Mother (Text): "Crawled in after the night with the lights. I heard them. Murmurs in town. I still had ears in town, the gossips. They were scared. Some were from the highways. Said there were others. Already frozen. Already...dead."

Mackenzie (Text): "They stayed here in town?"

Grey Mother (Text): "School house. The old schoolhouse. Still had a coal stove. They slept in the school house...waiting."

Mackenzie (Text): "Waiting for..."

Grey Mother (Text): "Mercy. They found it."

Mackenzie (Text): "I don't understand..."

Grey Mother (Text): "You'll understand when you find it."

Grey Mother will starve unless you stock her pantry with food. Scavenge what you can from the environment around you. Some food sources are easier to find than others.

This objective is a very quiet one like the firewood objective. Once the player gathers enough food, they must speak to Grey Mother. There are 4 different responses depending on whether or not the player breaks into the Orca Gas Station (even if they do not steal anything). Grey Mother will somehow know the weight of your honesty depending on how you get her food

Grey Mother (Text): "So, tell me Mainlander. Did you do what I asked? Did you ransack the gas station? Did you clean them out?"

Stole from the Gas Station

  • NO, I DIDN'T (LIE)

Mackenzie (Text): "No, I couldn't do it. I thought about what would happen if people came back and...couldn't bring myself to steal from them."

Grey Mother (Text): "I may be blind but I can still see the lies on you, Outsider. If you'll lie to me about that, what else will you lie about?"

  • YES, I DID (TRUTH)

Mackenzie (Text): "I did. I feel bad about taking other people's stuff but right now you need it more, and I can't waste any more time - - I need to find my friend."

Grey Mother (Text): "Might makes right, huh, Mainlander? You might just have what it takes to survive this long Winter after all."

Did not steal from the Gas Station

  • NO, I DIDN'T (TRUTH)

Mackenzie (Text): "I know you're angry about people abandoning you here, but if people come back and they found all their food found its way into your pantry...they'll be even less likely to help you. And I have a feeling that if someone comes back, you're going to need all the help you can get to make it through the Winter. So no...I didn't steal the gas station's supplies. But I found enough food to help you make it through the next few weeks, and I'll be back to check on you when I can."

Grey Mother (Text): "Well...I...guess I misjudged you, Mainlander. Over the years...I have learned that most people disappoint you, given the chance. You give me some hope."

  • YES, I DID (LIE)

Mackenzie (Text): "I did like you asked me. I took whatever I could find. If the situation is as bad as you said, it's everyone for themselves."

Grey Mother (Text): "Your words are harsh but there's no heart behind them. You're a kinder soul than I would have believed, Mainlander."

3rd Person Cutscene

Mackenzie: "So...you're all set for food and fuel. I'd like to hear what you know about my friend now."

Grey Mother "Looks" over her rifle

Grey Mother: "Friend...yeah, she passed through. Some people heard her, in the storm."

Mackenzie shakes his head

Mackenzie: "You already said that. Where did she go?"

Grey Mother sets her rifle on the left side of her chair

Grey Mother: "She passed through town. too many closed doors, broken houses. Nowhere to run, to hide."

Mackenzie: "Why didn't anyone help her?

Grey Mother: "Yes, why didn't they? They should have! They should have found her before it was too late."

Grey Mother seems tired. Try Talking to her after she's had some time to rest.

The cutscene ends as the player stands over Grey Mother. The message "GREY MOTHER NOW TRUSTS YOU MORE NOW. (+10)" appears. Talking to her gives more dialogue

  • STORY

Grey Mother (Text): "Not now, Mainlander. Leave me to my thoughts for awhile."

After sleeping or exploring for several hours, Mackenzie returns to Grey Mother

3rd Person Cutscene

Grey Mother: "You've come back..."

Mackenzie: "Yes. I'm still looking for my friend."

Mackenzie sits in the chair

Mackenzie: "Anything you can remember might help."

Grey Mother: "They said there were bad men who came from the tunnel. Your friend...the women...she must have passed through there."

Mackenzie: "Tunnel?"

Grey Mother: "The only way through the mountains. The only way she could have gone. Grey Mother wants to know what happened in the night! I heard the angry voices, the angry wind, but the rest is a mystery. Go to the tunnel and tell me what you find."

A dialogue compass appears as the cutscene ends

  • WOLVES?

Mackenzie (Text): "There are a lot of wolves out there."

Grey Mother (Text): "They never take long to move in, once the people leave."

Mackenzie (Text): "Any idea where I might find a way to defend myself?"

Grey Mother (Text): "My rifle stays with me. But, there might be other ways. In the old days, we used to scare them off with fire. A torch would do the trick. We used to make them out of pieces of wood, and a rag dipped in kerosene."

Mackenzie (Text): "I'll keep it in mind. Thanks."

  • BLIZZARD?

Mackenzie (Text): "You mentioned a storm before..."

Grey Mother (Text): "Mountain blizzards blow through here from time to time. People get stuck indoors, or worse..."

Mackenzie (Text): "Worse?"

Grey Mother (Text): "They wander in circles, only to die within reach of their homes. Even when they are right there in front of them. And they say Grey Mother is blind! Ha!"

  • FINISHED

Grey Mother (Text): "It's been a while since Grey Mother had anyone to cook for. Take some soup before you go..."

Mackenzie (Text): "Uhh...thanks."

A Metal Pot with some Home-made Soup is near the fireplace. A single green cup is available for the taking

Investigate the tunnels leading out of Milton. Grey Mother wants to know what happened there.

Mackenzie travels to the tunnel, and a cutscene plays as Mackenzie finds a Crashed Prison Transport Bus with a dead convict on the ground. He spots a piece of Astrid's scarf and rips it out of the back right window. He then uses his parka to rub the frost off the back door window and peers inside. The camera changes to show the inside, with a message written in blood on the floor: PERSERVERANCE

Mackenzie then makes his way back to Grey Mother to report what he has found, triggering another 3rd person cutscene

Grey Mother: "Did you find it?"

Mackenzie takes a seat

Mackenzie: "It was there, like you said."

Grey Mother: "And your friend?"

Mackenzie: "No sign of her. Tunnel's blocked. Looks like maybe...an avalanche. But I think she got through before that happened."

Grey Mother does not take this news well

Grey Mother: "If the tunnel is blocked, that's the end for Grey Mother."

Mackenzie: "So the tunnel is the only way through the mountains?"

Grey Mother: "No, not the only way through. But...my only way through."

The scene changes to show the Fireplace

Grey Mother: "Grey Mother is tired now. Let her rest for a while..."

The cutscene ends as the player stands over Grey Mother. The message "GREY MOTHER NOW TRUSTS YOU MORE NOW. (+10)" appears.

Grey Mother seems deep in thought. Return to her once she's rested a while.

Talking to Grey Mother and selecting STORY gives this response

Grey Mother (Text): "Leave me to rest, outsider."

After sleeping or exploring for several hours, Mackenzie returns to Grey Mother, triggering another 3rd person cutscene

Mackenzie: "I can't be here any more. My friend is out there and she needs my help. Please...tell me how to find her, and I'll do whatever I can to help you get out of here."

Grey Mother: "There's only one thing left to be done. You need to put her to rest."

Mackenzie: "Put her to...I'm not giving up yet!"

Grey Mother: "On the other side of town, there's a farmhouse. You'll find a key to a safety deposit box somewhere in there. Go to the bank, and bring me the box that matches the key. Then you'll understand what happened to her."

Mackenzie: "Wait...farm? Bank? What's this have to do with my friend?"

Grey Mother: "They left her, didn't they? She needed help and they let her go. This is how we make it right."

Will Mackenzie: "I don't understand..."

Grey Mother: "In the bank. You'll find the answers. Now go."

A dialogue compass appears as the cutscene ends

  • SICK?

Mackenzie (Text): "You seem...distracted. Tired. Are you ok?"

Grey Mother (Text): "I'm old. Some times the mind wanders, Outsider. Travels to other places. Other times. I think about her. Cold and alone."

Mackenzie (Text): "Are you talking about my friend?"

Grey Mother (Text): "They should have helped her."

  • BUS?

Mackenzie (Text): "She was there, at the bus. I'm sure of it."

Grey Mother (Text): "You have a sense of her passing there?"

Mackenzie (Text): "I think she left a sign for me. A word: "PERSERVERANCE"."

Grey Mother (Text): "A world (sic) from the old days. Why would she write that?"

Mackenzie (Text): "I don't know. Maybe...she wanted me to know she wouldn't give up?"

Grey Mother (Text): "Or reminding you not to."

Mackenzie (Text): "It has to mean something more."

Grey Mother (Text): "Why? Because you matter so much to her?"

Mackenzie (Text): "No. Because she wrote in her own blood."

Grey Mother (Text): "There is a town. Far to the North. Perseverance Mills. Maybe she was showing you the way."

Mackenzie (Text): "Perseverance Mills. How do I get there?"

Grey Mother (Text): "There is no way now. By car, perhaps. On foot? No path that Grey Mother knows of."

  • FARM?

Mackenzie (Text): "You mentioned a farm?"

Grey Mother (Text): "Yes...on the other side of town. The old Barker Farm."

Mackenzie (Text): "Barker?"

Grey Mother (Text): "Yes. A liar and a thief, mostly."

Mackenzie (Text): "Right."

Grey Mother (Text): "You'll see."

  • BANK?

Mackenzie (Text): "Tell me more about this bank."

Grey Mother (Text): "Bah. Bank from the Mainland. Never belonged here."

Mackenzie (Text): "Usually banks are pretty secure. Not sure I'll be able to get in."

Grey Mother (Text): "The branch closed years ago. The Collapse took everything."

Mackenzie (Text): "What do you do about...money?"

Grey Mother (Text): "Some of use still use the old paper. Or barter."

Mackenzie (Text): "I haven't seen paper money in...years. What of value could possibly be left in the bank?"

Grey Mother (Text): "You ask questions when you should be finding answers. Now get me the safety deposit box. Then, everything will become clear to you."

  • FINISHED

Mackenzie (Text): "I'll see what I can find."

Something precious was stolen from Grey Mother. Find it, and return it to her.

Search the Milton Farmhouse for a Safety Deposit Box Key.

Mackenzie heads to Paradise Meadows Farm down the road. Taking a detour to the nearby shed close to the farmhouse, Mackenzie finds the body of a dead man being eaten by a wolf.

Will Mackenzie: "Holy shit!!"

Scaring the wolf off, Mackenzie either loots the corpse for a Lock Box Key (Predux) or ignores the corpse. Picking up the Snare on the Work Bench generates a tutorial message

Snares

Setting Up A Trapline

You can use your energy chasing Rabbits and trying to stun them with stones, or you can use a more long-term strategy: Snares. Look for areas of high Rabbit activity, and place a Snare nearby. Check on it daily. You may get lucky and catch a Rabbit. You can set up multiple snares to increase your chances. A well maintained Trapline can be an excellent long-term source of food. Just remember, it may attract other wildlife!
{{#if:What I Know description|
What I Know description
}}

Entering the Tractor and Truck on the farm generates unique dialogue depending on which order they are entered.

  • Tractor entered first: "Hmm...maybe a dead battery?"
  • Truck entered second: "Just like the Tractor."
  • Truck entered first: "Truck seems to be dead. Engine won't even turn."
  • Tractor entered second: "Damn...just like the Truck."

The Paradise Meadows Farm Key is found on the dashboard of the Truck, and Mackenzie uses it to open the Farm House

Mackenzie: "The old lady said the key was here somewhere."

After some snooping, Mackenzie finds the key hidden in an Urn

Retrieve the contents of the Safety Deposit Box and return it to Grey Mother.

Mackenzie leaves the farm and heads to Milton Credit Union, but finds the vault locked

Mackenzie: "Now where would they hide the combination to this vault?"

If the player interacts with the vault again

Mackenzie: "Locked. Can't get in here yet."

Mackenzie goes to the office area and finds the Bank Manager's House Key

Mackenzie: "This must be the key to the bank manager's house."

Mackenzie finds the Bank Manager's House, and finds the Bank Vault Code inside, then heads back to the bank to open the vault. After doing so, he opens vault 15 and finds a lockbox inside, then returns to Grey Mother, activating a 3rd person cutscene

Grey Mother: "Did you find it?"

Will Mackenzie: "Here's the safety deposit box from the bank. I still don't understand..."

Grey Mother: "Shh. Give me the box."

Mackenzie hands the women the box and she opens it, producing a string of pearls

Mackenzie: "You sent me to steal...jewelry for you? You said this would help me find her."

Grey Mother: "Have faith, Outsider. It will. Do one last thing for me, and then I will tell you what you need to know."

Mackenzie: "I'm finished with this. I'll find my own way out of here..."

Mackenzie, angry and fed up, turns to walk out of the house

Grey Mother: "Then you will die like the others."

Mackenzie hesitates at the front door

Grey Mother: "Just one last task for Grey Mother, man who fell from the sky. And then you will get all the answers you need."

Mackenzie: "Hmph."

The message "GREY MOTHER NOW TRUST YOU MORE NOW. (+15)" appears. Talking to her triggers another 3rd person cutscene

Mackenzie: "What's this last thing you need from me?"

Grey Mother: "Right a wrong from the past, Outsider. That's all I ask."

Mackenzie walks back to Grey Mother

Mackenzie: "How can I do that?"

Grey Mother: "Take these pearls to Lily."

Grey Mother holds the pearls out for Mackenzie

Mackenzie: "Lily?"

A dialogue compass appears as the cutscene ends

  • LILY?

Mackenzie (Text): "All this time I thought you were talking about my friend. Who is Lily?"

Grey Mother (Text): "You'll find her at the Graveyard."

Mackenzie (Text): "The graveyard?"

Grey Mother (Text): "Near the Church. You should have passed it on the way into town."

Mackenzie (Text): "Why would she be waiting for me by the Church? You're not making any sense."

Grey Mother (Text): "You'll find her there. And your answers."

  • PEARLS?

Mackenzie (Text): "Why did you get me to steal those pearls from the bank?"

Grey Mother (Text): "Not from the bank. From the farmer. Barker."

Mackenzie (Text): "The farmer...is gone."

Grey Mother (Text): "So...he left with the other cowards, then?"

Mackenzie (Text): "No. He's dead. Looks like the wolves got him."

Grey Mother (Text): "And so it ends."

  • FINISHED

Mackenzie (Text): "Ok...this better help me find my friend..."

Find Lily's grave marker and pay service to her memory.

Mackenzie travels to the Graveyard near the church and a cutscene plays. Mackenzie stands before a tombstone with Grey Mother's Pearls, then kneels down on one knee and rubs the face iff to clean it. He then places the pearls on top of the tombstone. The camera pans around to show the name on the tombstone, Lilith Barker.

Mackenzie returns to Grey Mother and another cutscene plays as he walks over to her

Mackenzie: "Lily was your...daughter?"

Grey Mother: "You have a good heart, Mackenzie. You see things others would miss."

Mackenzie: "But the name - - Lily Barker...related to the farmer? You said they were liars and cheats."

Mackenzie takes a seat, as the camera pans over Grey Mother rubbing her blanket over her legs

Grey Mother: "The years have made me angry. Lily was my daughter...our daughter. I am also a Barker. The Farmer was my husband."

Mackenzie: "You lived...apart."

Grey Mother: "Yes. Our Lily died climbing."

Mackenzie looks up at the photo above the fireplace of Lily, as the camera zooms in on it

Grey Mother: "She wanted to summit all the peaks on Great Bear. She was young, but already very talented. One day she wanted to head out on her own. I said no, but he said yes. "Let her go, she needs to face it alone." So she faced it alone. And fell. I never forgave him."

Mackenzie: "And the pearls?"

Grey Mother: "They were my mother's. I gave them to Lily on her 16th birthday. The year she died. I wanted the pearls buried with her, but her father wanted to keep them to remember here. We fought bitterly, and never spoke again."

Mackenzie: "Losing a child is..."

Grey Mother: "...like losing your own life. But now maybe you can save your friend. And Lily's death doesn't have to be for nothing."

Mackenzie: "How?"

Grey Mother reaches behind her, and produces a key

Grey Mother: "Take this key. Upstairs, in my Lily's old room, is a trunk with her old climbing things."

Mackenzie takes it

Grey Mother: "Take the rope and the map. Follow Lily's path, and you'll find the back way through the mountains. It's the only way to find the route to Perseverance Mills. I hope you find her."

Mackenzie: "Thank you. What will you do now?"

Grey Mother: "I'm content to sit here and think of my Lily, resting with her favourite pearls. You've done a lot for me, Mackenzie. I won't forget about you."

Mackenzie: "I...I'll try to come back. Or I'll send help for you. There's bound to be someone out there who can help..."

Grey Mother: "My journey is finished. But yours is only beginning. Go, and don't think of Grey Mother, or Milton. We're of the old world now. The new world is for the strong to survive."

The cutscene ends as the player stands over Grey Mother. The message "GREY MOTHER NOW TRUSTS YOU MORE NOW. (+20)" appears. If the player speaks to her again and selects "Story"

Grey Mother (Text): "Leave me, Outsider. Your fate in this world is no longer tied to mine."

Mackenzie then goes upstairs and unlocks Lily's Trunk with the key, and takes the contents. The mission ends afterwards

The story continues in Paradise Lost (Predux)/Transcript.

Upon selecting "Trust"

Grey Mother (Text): "What would you like to talk about?"

A dialogue compass appears with many choices if they are unlocked

  • MILTON HISTORY

Grey Mother (Text): "So...the outsider wants to know more about Milton."

Mackenzie (Text): "Yeah. I'm curious about what happened here."

Grey Mother (Text): "To understand Milton you have to understand the Collapse."

Mackenzie (Text): "I mean...I know about the quakes. We experienced them too, on the Mainland."

Grey Mother (Text): "Not like this you didn't."

  • SHARPENING

Grey Mother (Text): "Pilot like you has probably lived a pretty comfortable life."

Mackenzie (Text): "I mean...no better than most people. No worse."

Grey Mother (Text): "Out here, people understand the value of hard work, good tools, and working with their hands."

Mackenzie (Text): "I can handle myself."

Grey Mother (Text): "Hmph. We'll see. They say the most important tool out here is a hatchet or knife. But keeping em' sharp is the secret."

Mackenzie (Text): "I'll keep that in mind."

  • THE COLLAPSE

Mackenzie (Text): "You've mentioned the Collapse a couple of times. I know it's been rough, but..."

Grey Mother (Text): "You can't imagine it, Mainlander. We were already on our knees."

Mackenzie (Text): "I'd like to understand how it affected Milton and other areas. I had no idea..."

Grey Mother (Text): "Exactly. Let me tell you how it was..."

  • SUPPLIES

Mackenzie (Text): "Milton seems very remote. What do you do in medical emergencies?"

Grey Mother (Text): "Ha! We do what we always do - - we take care of our own."

Mackenzie (Text): "Well...what about "outsiders"."

Grey Mother (Text): "I sense you'll need help. I heard gossip that the Miller's kept some kind of supply kit hidden in their back yard. Goods they smuggled in from the Mainland, and didn't want anyone to know about. If you can find them, you should take them. You'll need them."

  • PROTECTION

Mackenzie (Text): "There are...a lot of wolves around."

Grey Mother (Text): "Watch out. People say they can smell your fear."

Mackenzie (Text): "You think I could...borrow that Rifle of yours?"

Grey Mother (Text): "You'd leave an old lady defenseless so you could protect yourself? Shame on you, Mackenzie."

Mackenzie (Text): "Of course not! But it would be nice to have a little more protection out there. Surely someone else in this town must have owned a gun of some kind."

Grey Mother (Text): "Old Henry McDermott used to be with the Coast Guard. He kept a Distress Pistol around just in case."

Mackenzie (Text): "To call for help?"

Grey Mother (Text): "Right. Henry was always worried about kids getting their hands on it, so it won't be easy to find."

Mackenzie (Text): "Thanks."

  • RABBITSKIN MITTS

Grey Mother (Text): "If you want to survive out here, you'll have to learn to be self-sufficient."

Mackenzie (Text): "Right"

Grey Mother (Text): "When I was growing up, we understood what that meant. When something wore out, we couldn't just go online and order a new one...have it magically "drone delivered" to your door. Bah. As a little girl, I already knew how to hunt Rabbits, and turn their skins into clothes. I'll tell you how it's done."

  • GREAT BEAR

Mackenzie (Text): "What can you tell me about Great Bear?"

Grey Mother (Text): "Nothing you can't read in the history books."

Mackenzie (Text): "Uhh..."

Grey Mother (Text): "Oh for goodness sake. Take this one."

  • BETTER BOOTS

Grey Mother (Text): "You won't get far in this rugged terrain if you don't have the right footwear."

Mackenzie (Text): "I only have what I had on me when I crashed."
