Opening conversation

CHAPTER THREE

SURVIVAL SCHOOL

The cutscene from the previous mission ends, and a dialogue compass appears.

  • SURVIVAL SCHOOL?

Mackenzie (Text): "I don't really have time for this right now."

Jeremiah (Text): "Look. You don't have a choice, pal."

Mackenzie (Text): "I've got this far without you, Trapper."

Jeremiah (Text): "Not with a blood-hungry bear on your ass, you haven't. Trust me, Mackenzie. You really want to find your friend? There's miles of wilderness in all directions from here. You'll never make it."

Mackenzie (Text): "I'm listening."

Jeremiah (Text): "I'll teach you what you need to know."

Mackenzie (Text): "And then?"

Jeremiah (Text): "You'll have to do something for me."

Mackenzie (Text): "Kill the bear?"

Jeremiah (Text): "That part goes without saying. You don't kill the bear, we (sic) neither of us gets out of here alive."

  • LIGHTS?

Mackenzie (Text): "Did you see the lights in the sky again?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Yeah...could hardly sleep, it was so bright. There's something different about them. Not like the usual aurora borealis."

Mackenzie (Text): "The lights...the aurora...seemed to power things up. Lights, mainly."

Jeremiah (Text): "You sure? I didn't see anything like that."

Mackenzie (Text): "You have anything electrical in here?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Nope. I'm off-grid for a reason."

Mackenzie (Text): "What reason is that?"

Jeremiah (Text): "None of your business."

Mackenzie (Text): "The wolves seemed scared of the light."

Jeremiah (Text): "Scared of the aurora?"

Mackenzie (Text): "No. Lights. Like lights around buildings. They avoided the lights."

Jeremiah (Text): "You sure you haven't been into that Morphine, pilot?"

Mackenzie (Text): "Nevermind..."

  • FOREST TALKERS?

Mackenzie (Text): "When I was out there...I came across mention of the Forest Talkers". (sic) You know anything about that?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Oh yeah, I know all about the Talkers."

Mackenzie (Text): "What are they? Some kind of band? Or cult?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Nothing like that. Eco-activists. Terrorists, some call them. They've been fighting for years, against further exploitation of Great Bear."

Mackenzie (Text): "So...are they dangerous?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Not usually...they'll spike the occasional tree. Tie themselves to logging or mining equipment in protest. Don't think they've ever hurt anyone. But I'm not really up to date on current events."

Mackenzie (Text): "So, terrorists, or activists. Which is it?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Depends on your perspective, I guess. I try to stay out of politics. One thing's for sure - - they've been doing a lot more than just talking lately."

Mackenzie (Text): "What do you mean?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Few nights ago, heard a lot of shooting coming from the other side of the Lake. Could have been hunters I guess, but they aren't usually up this time of year."

Mackenzie (Text): "You think it was the Forest Talkers?"

Jeremiah (Text): "No idea. For their sake, I hope they got the hell out of the area before things got shut down. It won't be good for them, with Old Bear out there, and angry."

  • WOLVES

Mackenzie (Text): "Sure are a lot of wolves around here."

Jeremiah (Text): "Didn't used to be that way. I told you before, something's stirring them up."

Mackenzie (Text): "Maybe a bear's not the biggest of our worries."

Jeremiah (Text): "You just stay focused on what I'm telling you. Watch out for the Old Bear. He's cunning as hell. Make a wolf look like a damn lap dog."

Mackenzie (Text): "Right."

Jeremiah (Text): "Wolves - - they hate fire, like most wildlife. Campfire'll keep them away from you at night, most of the time. Improvise a torch if you have to. Flare will work too, you know one of those emergency ones for road accidents. Sometimes, if you get lucky, a stone to the head will scare them off."

Mackenzie (Text): "And if I don't have any of those things?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Then wait until they're close, and hit them with anything you can. Knife. Hammer. Hatchet. Or your own damn hands. And you don't stop hitting until one of you is dead."

Mackenzie (Text): "There's a theme here, isn't there?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Yeah. That is it: fight if you want to live. It's more Hobbes than Darwin."

Mackenzie (Text): "What?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Forget it."

  • WAY OUT?

Mackenzie (Text): "At some point I'm going to need to get out of here and find my friend."

Jeremiah (Text): "Only one way to go for you, pilot."

Mackenzie (Text): "And that is..."

Jeremiah (Text): "You want to get to Perseverance Mills? You gotta pass through the guts of that Dam."

Mackenzie (Text): "Doesn't seem possible. When I was there, the whole place seemed locked down. The parts that weren't falling down, anyway."

Jeremiah (Text): "That may be, but it's still the only way to get where you need to go."

Mackenzie (Text): "Come on...tell me more."

Jeremiah (Text): "Not 'til I'm sure you can make it."

Mackenzie (Text): "Make it where? Through the Dam?"

Jeremiah (Text): "The Dam. And beyond."

  • PHONE?

Mackenzie (Text): "I heard a phone ring...in an old hunting lodge...where I found the extra rifle. You know anything about that?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Nah. But it makes sense."

Mackenzie (Text): "How so?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Old phone lines don't depend on power like the new systems do. It's one of the many ways the old infrastructure is better than what we have now."

Mackenzie (Text): "Right."

Jeremiah (Text): "I'm serious. Everything's so integrated now. So linked. It's a house of cards. One system fails, they all fail."

Mackenzie (Text): "Any idea where the call could have come from?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Old analogue system could still work. No telling how the lines are set up. Call could be from anywhere on Great Bear, really. If you know what the lines and switches connect to, you could probably figure it out."

Mackenzie (Text): "Where could I find that out?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Those old analog lines...bet nobody even knows they're still hooked up. You'd need an old phone company line map. No idea where you could find one, though. Must be archives somewhere?"

Mackenzie (Text): "I'll keep it in mind."

Jeremiah (Text): "The old ways are the new ways again."

  • FINISHED

Mackenzie (Text): "I'd better get going."

Once the player is done asking Jeremiah questions, picking the next option begins the main mission

  • SURVIVAL LESSIONS

Mackenzie (Text): "Let's talk about some survival skills."

Jeremiah (Text): "What do you want to tackle?"

If the player choses NOTHING

  • NOTHING

Mackenzie (Text): "Nothing right now. I'll be back."

The player is presented with 4 options. They can be chosen and completed in any order desired, but must be completed at some point

If the player accepts a lesson, talks to Jeremiah, and selects SURVIVAL LESSIONS again

Mackenzie (Text): "Let's talk about some survival skills."

Jeremiah (Text): "Survival takes focus. We'll continue when you're done with your current lesson."

Learn to craft Fishing Tackle, then catch fish from Mystery Lake.

  • SURVIVAL SCHOOL: FISHING

Mackenzie (Text): "Fishing. Do we really have time for this?"

Jeremiah (Text): "You won't always have the means to hunt, so you need to know more than one way to feed yourself. Protein's scarce in the Winter. Fishing might help keep your dumb pilot ass from dying out there."

Mackenzie (Text): "You sure have a way with words."

Jeremiah (Text): "Head to the Camp Office at the edge of Mystery Lake. You'll find the gear you need for ice fishing. There's some huts on the lake. Bring back some fish and I'll know you won't die from starvation, at least."

Mackenzie (Text): "Why do I feel this is a thinly veiled scheme to get me to feed you for the Winter?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Nothing thinly veiled about it. Look at me, Mackenzie. That Old Bear wrecked me good. I won't hunt or trap this season. If me teaching you means we both survive...what's the harm? You want to try your hand at it?"

  • NO

Mackenzie (Text): "I think I'd rather try something else first."

Jeremiah (Text): "Suit yourself. But you'll have to tackle it some time. Ha!"

  • YES

Mackenzie (Text): "I'll be back with the fish."

Jeremiah (Text): "I can smell it already."

Mackenzie heads to the Camp Office and crafts a Fishing Tackle, the Ice Fishes at Mystery Lake. He returns to the Homestead, and then places the raw fish in the nearby Supply Bin. If the player asks about this lesson again after completing it

Jeremiah (Text): "You know what you need to know about Ice Fishing now. Not much more that I can tell you."

Learn to find, track, shoot, and butcher a Deer.

  • SURVIVAL SCHOOL: HUNTING

Mackenzie (Text): "What can you tell me about hunting?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Trick is to spot your target, get as close as you can, take a shot, and don't miss."

Mackenzie (Text): "That all?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Pretty much. A few years of practice and you might have a clue."

Mackenzie (Text): "I don't have a few years."

Jeremiah (Text): "There's a clearing, a few hilltops over from here. I'll mark it on your map. Almost always a herd of deer that winter there. Shoot one, and bring the meat back here, then we'll both know you can feed yourself in the wild."

Mackenzie (Text): "Ok. I'll bite."

Jeremiah (Text): "Remember - - if you hit one, but don't kill it, you'll have to track it til(sic) it drops. Look for blood in the snow, and follow its trail. It'll fall, eventually. Then we both eat. Good luck. You ready?"

  • NO

Mackenzie (Text): "Not quite yet, but I'll come back to this."

Jeremiah (Text): "Ok, but don't wait too long. You won't get better at shooting just by thinking about it."

  • YES

Mackenzie (Text): "Yeah, I'll give it a shot."

Jeremiah (Text): "Then good luck. Come back to me when you've bagged one."

Mackenzie heads to the Unnamed Pond, kills a Deer or two, then places the raw meat in the nearby Supply Bin outside the Homestead. If the player asks about this lesson again after completing it

Jeremiah (Text): "I think you've shot enough deer for one day. You're done with that."

Learn to mend and maintain clothing. It'll save your life some day.

  • SURVIVAL SCHOOL: CLOTHING

Mackenzie (Text): "What do I need to know about clothing?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Its damn cold out there, right? What you wear might make the difference between life and death."

Mackenzie (Text): "I'm listening."

Jeremiah (Text): "Wind or wet will kill you if you let it. Wear wind-blocking clothes on your outside layer if you can, and use natural shelter whenever possible. Wind will drop your core temperature quickly and before you know it you'll have hypothermia, or worse."

Mackenzie (Text): "What about wetness?"

Jeremiah (Text): "That one's obvious. You get wet from snowfall, falling through the ice, whatever - - in these Winters, you'll get frostbite in no time. Wear waterproof clothing if you can, especially on your feet. If you clothes get wet, dry them out by a fire."

Mackenzie (Text): "That's it?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Almost. Think about carrying weight - - the heavier your clothing, the less food and other supplies you can carry without getting tired. And remember, you want some tough layers to protect you from falls and animals, especially these days."

Mackenzie (Text): "It all makes sense."

Jeremiah (Text): "Great. Remember though, it's not enough to have good gear if you don't take care of it. Needle and thread are your friends. Keep your clothing in good shape and it'll take care of you. Sacrifice any shitty gear you find to keep your better gear in action."

Mackenzie (Text): "Got it."

Jeremiah (Text): "Good. Now prove it. Take this old parka of mine. There's an old Lookout tower just off the railway. Usually some Forestry Service gear there in there. Use their supplies to repair my old parka."

Mackenzie (Text): "I'm telling you, I understand about taking care of gear."

Jeremiah (Text): "The only way to know it, is to do it, Mackenzie. Now get out there."

  • NO

Mackenzie (Text): "I'd rather learn something else first."

Jeremiah (Text): "Too good to pick up a sewing kit, huh? You'll learn the hard way."

  • YES

Mackenzie (Text): "Alright, I'll be back with your damn coat. Good as new."

Jeremiah (Text): "That's the spirit."

Mackenzie heads to the Forestry Lookout, repairs Jeremiah's Bearskin Coat with a Cured Black Bear Hide lying up there, and then returns to the Homestead to give it to Jeremiah.

Mackenzie (Text): "I've got your coat. Good as new."

Jeremiah (Text): "Good enough, anyways."

If the player asks about this lesson again after completing it

Jeremiah (Text): "Thanks for fixing my coat. That'll do, as far as mending lessons."

Learn to identify and harvest some of the edible, medicinal flora native to Great Bear Island. (Place in the container at Jeremiah's Cabin)

  • SURVIVAL SCHOOL: HARVESTABLE PLANTS

Mackenzie (Text): "Seems if you have your way, I'll never be a vegetarian out here."

Jeremiah (Text): "I'm sure it's no coincidence that most of the animals out here are made of meat, Mackenzie."

Mackenzie (Text): "Aren't there any plants I can eat?"

Jeremiah (Text): "Well, yeah...most of the year, you can subsist mainly on plants you can harvest. Berries. Nuts. Mushrooms. But, not much grows in the Winter."

Mackenzie (Text): "There must be something."

Jeremiah (Text): "Definitely. Cat Tails - - they don't taste like much but they'll keep you from starving. You usually find them near water. Reishi Mushrooms - - they grow on tree stumps. You can make a tea on them. A good natural antibiotic. Rose Hips - - they look like little red berries. Also good in a kind of tea. Great for treating pain. Old Man's Beard Moss - - you'll see it hanging from trees. You can wrap it in a bandage and use it to prevent bites from getting infected. Learn to identify each of these, cause they could save your life, Mackenzie. You ready to give it a shot?"

  • NO

Mackenzie (Text): "Nah...let's try somethig(sic) else."

Jeremiah (Text): "Suit yourself. You're just postponing the inevitable."

  • YES

Mackenzie (Text): "Yeah, I'm ready."

Jeremiah (Text): "Then go to it, oh mighty killer of fuzzy animals."

Mackenzie leaves the Trapper's Homestead, finding the necessary amount of plants and fungi, and deposits them in the nearby Supply Bin outside the Homestead. If the player asks about this lesson again after completing it

Jeremiah (Text): "I suspect you know how to find the plants you need now. Next subject."

Return to Jeremiah.

After completing all 4 tasks requested of him, Mackenzie returns to Jeremiah. A 3rd person cutscene begins with Mackenzie walking to Jeremiah

Jeremiah: "Hmph. Not bad for a pilot."

Mackenzie: "Yeah, well...thanks for the help. I think I'm ready to get out of here."

Jeremiah: "I have a little graduation present for you."

Jeremiah reaches behind him and produces his personal Knife

Mackenzie: "Oh yeah?"

Jeremiah: "Here."

He tosses the knife to Mackenzie, who catches and studies the rather large knife

Mackenzie: "Well...thanks."

Jeremiah: "You've earned it. And I have a feeling that you're going to be needing it before you're through."

Mackenzie: "I have a feeling you might be right."

The cutscene ends as the player stands over Jeremiah. The message "JEREMIAH NOW TRUSTS YOU MORE NOW. (+15)" appears. Talking to him triggers another 3rd person cutscene

Mackenzie is sitting on the bench with his Rifle next to him. Jeremiah is sitting on the cot nearby

Mackenzie: "Look...I appreciate your help in learning how to survive out here. I really do. But...my friend is still out there, and they may need my help. It's time I got going."

Mackenzie gets up as Jeremiah speaks

Jeremiah: "Like I said before, Mackenzie. There's only one way out of here - - through that Dam."

Mackenzie: "Ok. So...how do I get through it then?"

Jeremiah: "I'm the only one that can get you through. And I want to help you, I really do."

Mackenzie: "I'm tired of being jerked around, Jeremiah. I need to get out of here."

Jeremiah: "Listen, Mackenzie. There's more at stake here than you realize. This is about more than you, or me, or your friend."

Mackenzie: "What are you talking about?"

Jeremiah: "Just...listen. If you can't get past the bear, the rest doesn't matter. If I was well enough I'd take care of it myself. But I'm wrecked. We'll die here unless you finish it off."

Mackenzie: "I'm a pilot with a bit of survival training. I'm not an experienced hunter. What can I do?"

Jeremiah: "You can pull a trigger, can't you?"

Mackenzie: "Well...yeah."

Jeremiah: "Get out there. Keep your wits about you. He's out there. Waiting. But you're going to have to bait him, so the fight can happen on your terms."

Mackenzie: "What the...bait him? With what?"

Jeremiah: "Bears can smell blood from over 20 clicks away. You get out there, you cut yourself enough that you bleed, and he'll come to you. I'm sure of it."

Mackenzie: "So...you want me to use myself as bait? There's no way I'm doing this. This is crazy."

Jeremiah: "He'll come for you when you're not expecting it. But you won't miss it. It won't be subtle. It'll sound like a ton of muscle and bone bearing down on you like a freight train of hate and hunger. You stand your ground. Do not flinch. You raise your rifle. You sight him. And when you see between his eyes - - you squeeze that trigger."

Mackenzie: "Ho boy..."

Jeremiah: "It's the only way."

Mackenzie: "And if I make it...how will I know when it's done?"

Jeremiah: "He won't go down with one shot. He'll run off and it'll seem like you got him but he'll be back. He always comes back. You do it again. And again. As many times as it takes to bring him down."

Mackenzie: "This sounds like suicide."

Jeremiah: "Only if you fail."

Mackenzie: "You're sure this is the only way?"

Jeremiah: "You bring me the Old Bear's ear, and I'll get you out of here. I will give you everything you need to find your friend."

Mackenzie: "Ok. Well, you'd better hope this works."

Jeremiah: "Oh yeah?"

Mackenzie: "Yeah. Or I'll be sending the Old Bear back for you."

Jeremiah: He chuckles "Remember, Mackenzie. Wait till you see the whites of his eyes. Then squeeze the trigger."

Mackenzie: "I understand."

Jeremiah: "It's not something you can understand with your head, Mackenzie. No man can know if he has what it takes to face the bear until he's faced it. And then...it's not about what's in here," He points to his head "it's about what you got in here." he beats his chest "You aren't going to kill the bear with your head. You're going to kill him with your heart."

Mackenzie nods, then turns to pick up his Rifle at the bench. He walks off with the Rifle on his back, turning around and pulling out Jeremiah's Knife, and then cutting his left palm and showing it to the Trapper. He is now the bait. Mackenzie walks off and the cutscene ends

The story continues in Jeremiah's Folly/Transcript. {{#invoke:Navbox|navbox}}
