I am not sure why George originally removed the paragraph, however, I just spent several hours testing this in game. I do not believe that the statement "You can walk backwards away from a wolf as long as you don't run" holds any water, on two accounts. From my limited testing:
#Facing away from, or towards a wolf does not appear to impact whether it decides to charge.
#Sprinting away from a wolf greatly increases the chance that the player leaves the wolf's detection radius and the wolf will stop stalking, whereas walking keeps the player in range. This would suggest that sprinting is actually the safest option.

I tested on both Stalker and Interloper, both night and day, with multiple wolves. All tests used a fully rested character with only the start supplies. More vigorous testing or examination of the game code is required. For now, all I can confirm for certain is that walking backwards does not prevent a wolf from charging.
