It has since been ported to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series X, WeGame, GOG, and Epic Games Store.

A sequel, BLACKFROST: The Long Dark II, is set to release in 2026.

Summary
The Long Dark begins with a massive geomagnetic anomaly that affects all electronic equipment. Cars, radios, computers and most other modern technology have been rendered useless. The world is quiet now, and, with no lights, the nights are long and dark.

A front seat to the end of the world. Immersive first-person exploration game-play featuring a stunning, original art style. Navigate the savage beauty of the Northern wilderness while facing the hazards of a new post-digital frontier.

Survive by your wits alone. Be on the lookout for potential supply caches, all the while ameliorating and improving your survival skills to overcome the dangers of harsh weather, aggressive wildlife, lack of food and water, and the mysterious Aurora that adds more uncertainty to an already uncertain survival situation.

Survival of the fittest. Deep survival simulation game-play whence every decision matters. Explore a large, open world in search of resources while balancing unpredictable conditions against the needs of your daily and, hopefully, long-term survival.

Game Modes
Wintermute
*Play the Story of Will Mackenzie & Dr. Astrid Greenwood as they struggle to survive, crashed in the wilderness in the aftermath of a mysterious geomagnetic disaster.
Survival Mode
*Experience potentially hundreds of hours of free-form sandbox game-play in Survival Mode. Push yourself and your skills to last as long as possible without the Story elements.
Challenge
*Test your skills with scenarios designed to Challenge seasoned players. How fast can you complete these challenges?

Game Versions
As of December 5th, 2022, The Long Dark can be purchased in several different forms from Steam or Epic Games:
Gameplay
<!-- QUARANTINING THIS AS DONT THINK IT BELONGS HERE EXACTLY BUT MAYBE SOMEWHERE ELSE ~~~~ As Mackenzie, you will:

*Risk the daily hazards of wilderness survival in this deep simulation that tracks weather, time of day, temperature, food/water, energy use/consumption, and gear condition. Fight the elements to stay alive!

*Explore a beautiful but savage Northern Wilderness, searching for gear and supplies as you struggle to survive a dangerous wilderness setting where the weather can suddenly turn on you, and wildlife stalk you. The hunter becomes the hunted!

*Face morally challenging scenarios that push you to your limit. Will you risk your life for the common good, or live by the adage, “every man for himself”? How far will you go to survive?

*Experience a mature storyline, rich world, cast of memorable characters, and hours of narrative gameplay in the Survival Story mode with a riveting storyline that advances at your pace.

*Enjoy dozens of hours of sandbox gameplay where you fight to last as long as possible across a range of survival scenarios.

Game-level systems:
;Dynamic Time Of Day

The day/night cycle in The Long Dark is a fundamental part of the game, both from a visual/immersion point of view and from a simulation point of view. The lighting conditions change continually through a 24 cycle as the sun/moon passes through the sky. Blue or grey skies change to a star-filled canopy when night falls. The environmental sounds you hear will change based on whether it is day or night, and expect both wildlife and other survivor patterns to change based on the time.

As time passes, the survival simulation that accounts for hunger / thirst / fatigue / temperature / condition is updated each frame. In some cases time will advance due to resting or long-travel, and those jumps in time are fully accounted for in the survival sim.

The real-time duration of a day/night cycle in-game is something we’re still experimenting with, but of course it will be much shorter than 24 actual hours. Closely tied to the time of day is weather, which we talk about in the next section.

;Dynamic Weather

Along with time of day, dynamic weather is a key part of survival experience in The Long Dark. The first season in the game is winter, and you can expect to encounter challenging weather conditions such as blizzards that arrive suddenly, extreme temperature drops at night, as well as beautiful sunny skies or a gentle snowfall. The changing weather in The Long Dark will keep players on their toes, as being prepared for storms (and understanding how to survive them) will be necessary for you to avoid becoming another frozen corpse in the forest.

;Survival Simulation

The survival simulation accounts for hunger, thirst, fatigue, temperature (how warm/cold you are), and overall condition. Each of these variables is affected by a multitude of factors, and there are some relationships between things (for example, extreme hunger will also cause fatigue). If these variables reach critical levels, the player condition will begin to degrade. You can think of condition as representing how close to death the player is… once condition reaches zero, it’s game over. There is one exception to this worth mentioning here — if you have the Willpower buff active, you will be able to cling to your last sliver of life, hopefully long enough to fix whatever problems have brought you to your final moments.

Beyond affecting your overall condition, there will be side-effects when things like hunger or fatigue reach critical levels. You won’t be able to move as fast, you won’t be able to carry as much weight, your ability to aim may be impaired, your hearing may be less acute, etc.

;Level Loading

The world of The Long Dark is broken up into large levels that are connected together through transition paths. You will be able to travel back and forth between these levels (and the state of the levels is persistent). The impression will be very much of a continuous world, but we reduce our technical risk substantially by using discrete level loading rather than a seamless world that requires streaming.

Interiors can be thought of as mini-levels with the transition point being the doorway. These levels are loaded in an additive manner (using a Unity term), so there won’t be any delay when returning to the outside.

;Save / Restore

The state of the world and player is persistent in The Long Dark. There will be multiple save slots available for manual saving, as well as an autosave. To reduce the technical complexity of save/restore, you will only be able to save when at Player Safehouse or Camp. This frees us from trying to save state in the middle of combat or a complex mission.-->
No electricity: Only you and the brutal, brumal weather. To stay alive you will need to provide for yourself from what you can find amongst the landscapes. Nearby structures may still stand, and, perhaps they are all abandoned; perhaps they still contain useful equipment. They definitely can provide shelter. And the woods—the woods are everywhere. You grew up with woods like these, you have fished waters like these. There is much that nature can provide and much it can take away.

Most important now is your health. It is only you, no one else to rely on. You must meet your basic needs. Where is food? Water? Where to sleep? What can be done to push back the constant, insidious cold? All must be answered by you.

With luck and determination, you may find relief — even comfort — here in the new wilds. But there are other places to be; there must be ways to get there.

Your only objective: Stay healthy, stay alive.
*Condition

Mitigate the needs of survival.
*Warmth
*Fatigue
*Thirst
*Hunger

Navigate a threatening region.
*Time of Day
*Weather
*Wildlife
*Maps

Eventually establish yourself after a while...
*Safe House

And find your way in the new world.

"How far will you go to survive?" — The Long Dark

Realism
Realism

The game is created whilst striving for realism in many areas and as such borrows many afflictions and core survival mechanics from real life. It gives players an interesting set of choices to play with safely. The creators do not, however, as a general rule, tune the gameplay for realism or to conform to real-world expectations. Therefore, new players may find some things intuitive from the beginning and may need to learn how some other aspects work during play or from other, more knowledgeable, players.

Wintermute Plot
Will Mackenzie works as a pilot for Jackrabbit Remote Transport prior to the First Flare event. Astrid Greenwood, his ex-wife, comes to Will after years of being apart to ask him if he can fly her to an isolated town in the Northern area of Great Bear Island to treat a patient of hers. She also brings a mysterious case with her and does not want to reveal the content to Will. While the two separated some time ago, both still wear their wedding rings. It is implied that they had a child together who had passed away. Mackenzie also used to have an alcohol problem that he claims is under control now.

After hesitantly accepting to fly Astrid to Great Bear Island, Will's airplane crashes into the Northern Canadian wilderness of Great Bear Island when a mysterious geomagnetic storm cuts all power to his instruments. After the crash, in Episode 1, Will finds Astrid's case but not his ex-wife. Thus, he begins a journey to search for her across the remote wilderness of Great Bear Island.

Reception
The Long Dark received "critical acclaim" from Steam users, according to Steam reviews. On release, it received mostly mixed to positive reviews from critics, praising its sandbox nature, the content and the atmosphere while criticizing the story. Fan base alike also criticized the story mode calling it a "fetch quest" rather than a story.

Other Game Features
Time Capsule
The Time Capsule is a playable archive of previous builds of The Long Dark released for free by Hinterland, and allows users to play builds of the game as far back as the pre alpha builds. This functionality is currently only available to Steam users due to Steam's infrastructure allowing access to beta builds of The Long Dark.

Modding
The Long Dark currently does not have any official modding support aside from the Steam Workshop providing support for other languages for the Steam version of the game. Despite this, individuals have taken to creating unofficial mods that add unsupported content to the game. Hinterland has so far not shown much support regarding modding, aside from a single dev post in 2022 discussing their acknowledgment regarding The Long Dark Mods, and it is currently unknown how modding will affect the future of The Long Dark.

At this time, this wiki only acknowledges the legitimacy of The Long Development project; an unofficial project that adds new regions to Great Bear Island.
