== Rationale ==<br />
The copyright status of game screenshots is neither clear nor necessarily static. Should the facts or their interpretation ever change, having used a designated template to mark images of this type would allow the wiki to easily adapt to the new situation.<br />

In particular, the legal status is unclear because the [[:wikipedia:Fair use|fair use doctrine]], which is often applied to game screenshots, is a legal concept that only exists in few jurisdictions. Even where it does exist, it is sometimes interpreted very narrowly, so that something that qualifies as "fair use" in one country is not necessarily "fair use" in another country. With contributors spread around the globe, this can make it hard to tell exactly what is and isn't allowed.<br />

Additonally, in some jurisdictions, the person taking a screenshot has an automatic copyright on it that may not be easy to waive. This further complicates the legal evaluation.<br />

The situation is also not necessarily static.
