New page

If you are having trouble with this challenge, here's what worked for me (Spoiler Alert!):

Short version:

Basement > east to rope > make water on landing > other rope to Draft Dodger's Cabin > follow river to Pleasant Valley Farmstead > take long driveway to Heartbreak Bridge > stay right of river and follow past Lower Falls to bridge in front of Cascading Falls > turn right hugging cliff on left and find the cave to Carter Dam.

Have never seen Bear below Carter Dam but you never know. From top exit out of Carter Dam > cliff slide to pond > run to Logging Camp > run over hill to Clear Cut > quickly ascend to Forestry Lookout > deploy rope (if no rope then good luck) and descend > From base of cliff dash madly to Frozen Creek > approach Trapper's Cabin from the north along cliff for best safety/visibilty.

Detailed version:

First, patch the wound and find the basement. Grab every liquid, garmet, and piece of fuel you can find. Don't waste time mending for now. If the basement is not there (happened to me once) sprint to the cliff behind the houses and bear leftwards to the ropes.

Now, some basic guidelines:

-Water is the big limiter here. You will most likely find plenty of food to get you to the cabin, but water is at a premium because going outside exposes you to the Bear. Therefore, whenever you find a safe place to make water, make as much as weight allows (5-6 Liters)

-Out wait the Bear. Upon going outside, stay near the door, listen for the Bear, then try to put eyes on him while remaining within dashing distance to the door. If you can't see him and he sounds so close the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, head inside and wait.

-Utilize rope climbs, the bear can't follow.

-Once you have a good water supply, mend all your clothes. The blizzards are brutal.

-The Bear charges when he has line-of-sight, but often walks when he doesn't (unless he is playing catch-up). Nighttime and blizzards are good chances to leave a building and elude the Bear.

-When you leave a building, figure out where the Bear isn't, and run like mad. Run past wolves. If you have a flare, turn and scare them later. Taking a good pace helps you elude.

-Flares don't always work for the Bear. Better to wait and then elude if possible.

Continuing:

-Like mentioned above, when leaving the basement, determine if the Bear is near, and if so, try to pinpoint his location. If you suspect he's too close, go back inside and wait/sleep. However, you can't delay too long in the beginning, since you have limited water. When you can, dash to the cliff behind the houses and bear to the left. If you are not being chased, pick up sticks as you go. Find the rope and descend to the landing.

-On the landing you are safe from the Bear, but the weather will probably be crazy. Use the landing to melt as much water as possible. The far corner sometimes offers OK wind shelter, but the direction often changes.

-When watered up, peek down the next rope. Sometimes the Bear is down there. When you have an opening, descend the rope, turn right (with the cliff behind you) and sprint to the Draft Dodger's Cabin. If you are not being chased pick up sticks, mushrooms, and rose hips. Rest fully.

-The Bear will almost definitely try to trap you in the cabin. Here's where your water from the landing helps. After resting, go outside, stay behind the railing, and try to locate the Bear. Usually he is ready to pounce, so be prepared to go back in and rest/wait an hour and try again. It can take as much as 3 days, but eventually you will either see him some distance in the woods or not hear him. This is your chance, take it.

-With the cabin at your back, point 45-deg right and run. Go over the hill and carefully "slide" sideways down the cliff on the other side to the river. Bear right until the river forms a T-junction, then head left down the stem of the T until you come to a bridge. Exit the river to the right just after passing under the bridge. You should have the Pleasant Valley Farmstead on your bow. Any time you have 1/4 stamina, sprint till empty. When walking, look behind you.

-Sleep on the closed-in porch and leave food here for better preservation. Repair your clothing and equipment and rest up. The porch allows you to listen for the Bear / slam the door in his face if he charges. Wait until the bear enters a field or you have a clear shot down the driveway, and sprint for Heartbreak Bridge.

-Turn right before the bridge, and keeping the river on your left, head all the way past the Lower Falls to the next bridge. Then go kiss the cliff and turn right, hugging the cliff on the left. Find the Cave to Carter Dam and go through.

-The Bear won't follow in the Cave and I've never seen him in the lower dam area. Watch out for the wolf in the reservoir. Heal up/rest/equip, and GET LOTS OF WATER in the Dam.

-Be prepared when you exit the Upper Dam, the Bear will come charging. If he charges from the pond, he will have to find a route around the bridge. Wait for him to get around the bridge and onto the plateau in front of the entrance, then slide/zigzag down the cliff to the pond and run, run, run, well right of the bridge.

-Run past any wolves and get to the Logging Camp (the trailer nearest the road). Here you might get stuck for awhile so I hope you have brought water. Like the DD Cabin, the Bear will try to trap you here. As before, scout from the door. If you find a break, sprint out of the trailer 45-deg to the right, going up and over the hill. On the other side, bear right slightly and reach Clear Cut, then quickly ascend to the Forestry Lookout.

-This is a great place to prepare for your final dash. The Bear has trouble reaching the summit (but will try) and cannot follow you up the stairs. Hopefully the rope is there, carefully deploy on the side 90-deg left of where you came up. Go back up into the Lookout, rest/hydrate. When ready, descend the rope.

-The cliff should greatly impede the Bear's ability to keep up with you. Save your stamina at first. With the cliff at your back, bear to the right and cross Frozen Creek. Have a flare ready for wolves, start running. You're looking for Birch Trees, and after that Old Man's Beard (as waypoints). After the Old Man's Beard head as straight and quickly as possible to the cliffs at the map's edge. Turn left, hugging the cliffs and keeping to defilade. You will go over a rise and then have a great view of the Trapper's Cabin and any fauna/bears in the area. I've never seen the Bear here using this method. Good luck!
