The first aurora was when mackenzie's plane crashed yet everything is in ruins and people are gone by the time he makes it down the mountain. You find some bodies scattered around but nowhere near enough. What started the fires that burnt down the homes if it's winter? I imagine the earthquakes caused the damage to the railroad and the collapsed tunnels but the homes have wood stoves, no gas pipes to break and catch fire, even the gas pumps survived that though.
