The thing is you don't actually need to eat all the time, i thought the same at first and was scared of that hunger bar going empty, but after you understand how the game works you'll realize you only need to eat before you sleep. If you really have to scare a wolf away a safe strategy (safer than flares) is to light a campfire: when the wolf gets too close it'll run away, even if the fire isn't fully started yet.
