The '''Shotgun''' is a [[Tools]] item found exclusively in [[Episode 5: The Light At The End Of All Things]] in the [[Wintermute]] story of [[The Long Dark|''The Long Dark'']].

== Overview ==
A single-shot, break action shotgun, the Shotgun performs devastating blows to any animal it hits. The Shotgun fires [[Shotgun Ammunition|12GA Slugs]] instead of pellet based buckshot. This effectively turns it into a high powered [[Hunting Rifle]] (of which it shares similar holding and walking animations), albeit only being able to fire 1 round at a time before reloading. When reloading, a [[Shotgun Shell Casing]] is ejected and a fresh Slug is placed inside.

The only options present in the Backpack menu are to Unload or Drop the Shotgun. Slugs/Casings unloaded from the Backpack are place directly into the inventory. The Shotgun cannot be Harvested.

It if found exclusively in the mission [[High Energy]] in Episode 5, during Part 2: Strange History.

There are 3 Shotguns found during the mission:

* The first is found in the Supply Room (opened with the [[Supply Room Key]] just before leaving the [[Suzuki Radio Telescope]] facility) along with 23 rounds of shotgun ammunition.
* A second is found inside a [[Weapon Locker]] at the 2nd Geothermal Station, along with [[Shotgun Ammunition]].
* A third shotgun can be found in the 3rd Geothermal Station, inside another Weapon Locker.

The Shotgun disappears from Mackenzie's inventory during the mission [[Conflagration]] (Part 4: Terminus) of the Episode.

=== Use ===
As a shotgun, it has tight spread but very poor range. The shotgun fires slightly lower than it's iron sights when aiming; take this into account when aiming a shot.

It is advised to aim towards a [[Wolf]] and shoot at it while it is close. It is very likely to kill a Wolf if used this way with no risk to [[Will Mackenzie]]. If the shot does not kill it, the Wolf will be in a flee movement and not attack Will.
