One thing that can be down to carry rope while not having to deal with added weight is right click on it and move it with the item placement tool of the game. This works with every item in the game but is most usefull with ropes as these slow you down significantly. works fine with bearskin bedroll too but I wouldn't abuse it that much, for rope it's usefull when you know where you want to go with it, but traveling while doing this method is tedious and unnimersive.
