You won't get a hatchet on interloper. You'll have to make one.

But make sure to keep prybars around if you want to go fishing. You don't really want to go carrying around the hammer to break ice, and certainly don't want to use knife or hatchet. Breaking ice knocks the crap out of the tool you use to do it, and prybars are common. Later you'll probably want to stick to the hammer as you can repair it.

I've found around 80 rounds for it so far in a sandbox game. Were the previous inhabitants of Bear Island Canadian or American? :P

That actually makes the game rather easy. It's no rifle, but it's still easier to hunt with than the bow. And you can still take down a deer or wolf in a single head shot by getting up close crouching. With 80 rounds, I would never have to make a bow at all.

The hacksaw takes an hour and a half to get through a tree limb when an axe takes 45 minutes.

This is why it's always a risky option in long term survival - you can keep repairing it indefinitely as long as you have metal (unlike the axe and knife which will eventually run out of whetstones to sharpen). And it's relatively light. But the chance of the weather changing for the worst while you saw away at treelimbs or carcasses is quite high.

If you want to survive more than 200 days, you must use the forge. You will eventually run out of whetstones for sharpening your tools and the only way around is just to make new tools. You can stave this off by making fires with sticks and using the hacksaw wherever possible, but you will eventually run out of food.

And on Interloper you will have to use it very early in the game as axe and knife don't spawn and you won't last long otherwise. Which is why a lot of Interloper players complain it's a bit too linear.
