Generaly two shots to a bear or moose head will have a very high chance of instantly killing due to the crit chance but still be carefull in case the critical hit dosen't occur as you would have a pretty angry animal on you very quickly.

Found a Moose (or rather the Moose found me) near the landing gear at the entrance to Timberwolf Mountain during the Nomad challenge. After getting beaten half to death I was forced to spend 6 days in the Mountaineer's Hut rather than 3 days.
