Military-Grade MRE is a packaged food item in The Long Dark.

The MRE is a rare and only found inside safes, prepper caches, locked lockers and outdoor sporting-type locations (such as Hunting Blinds). Usually only 1-3 may be found per region, based on Survival Mode.

A single MRE can restore a whopping 1750 calories, making it the most efficient calories per unit of any food item (although Energy Bars and Salty Crackers have a higher calorie-to-weight ratio, at 30% and 41.6% more calorie-dense, respectively).

"MRE" stands for "Meal Ready to Eat". As suggested by the name, MREs can be eaten as-is, without heating or special tools to prepare or consume them. In Episode 3, individually wrapped Airline Food meals feature similar stats to the MRE. These meals, like MREs, require no special tools to open and can be eaten uncooked (despite appearing like 'frozen dinners'). Whether these similarities cast a more favorable light on airline food or MREs is unclear.

MRE have a very low chance of causing Food Poisoning and Decay much slower than many foods.

Trivia
* In real life, MREs are used by militaries to feed troops during combat, and in real-world northern climates these packaged meals can last three to five years, depending on storage temperature.
*The Canadian Military does supply its deployed members with MREs (Meal Ready to Eat), which are typically American-made. More often it uses IMP (Individual Meal Pack)--the exclusive field ration of the Canadian Forces.
Water Purification Tablets are a consumable to convert Unsafe Water into Potable Water in The Long Dark.

Overview
Water Purification Tablets are a consumable item which can be used to convert up to 1 litre of Unsafe Water into 1 litre of Potable Water per tablet. Boxes always initially contain 4 tablets. Purifying water takes one in-game minute.

* Since Unsafe Water is almost exclusively produced at a fire, Water Purification Tablets are of niche usefulness and are comparable to the fuel required to boil 1L of water and make it Potable.
**Using the tablets instead of boiling the water will save between 19-29 in-game minutes per liter of water, depending on the player's Cooking level.
* They are relatively rare, consumable, cannot be crafted or harvested.
* Water Purification Tablets degrade in condition over time indoors and outside, and will vanish if inside of a Container when becoming Ruined (0% condition). Ruined tablets outside of containers can still be used, and tablets of the same condition stack. In console edition, ruined (0% condition) tablets are useless. Condition does not affect conversion rate.

* Note: it is more time effective to use these directly from your inventory rather than at a fire - it will take approximately one in-game minute per tablet compared to ten.
* These tablets can be useful when time is of the essence, such as in the Whiteout and especially Hopeless Rescue challenges to complete said challenge in the best possible time, but are less useful in Survival and Wintermute due to the abundance and accessibility of fuel.

Wood Matches are a Fire Starting Tools and a small light source in The Long Dark.

Overview
Each match weighs a mere 0.008 of a kilogram, but there are always 12 found together in one box. Using a wood match increases the base chance of successfully lighting a fire by five percent.

Light sources are equipped with the '1' key by default. Hold the left mouse button to strike the match for a small light source that lasts for a few seconds. While a lit match is held, your "Feels Like" temperature will rise by a few degrees. Sadly, such a small fire will not deter Wolves.

Lighting a match will cause the survivor to hold it closely in their hand, where it will create light for 13 seconds until the fire travels down the stem and reaches the survivor's fingers, where they drop it in pain. Running with a lit match will cause the flame to grow brighter, causing it to burn out faster.

Pressing H with a lit match will cause the survivor to flick the match into the distance, where it disappears and the light is extinguished.
Tips
*Firestrikers and Wood Matches are preferable to Cardboard Matches at low firestarting skill. This will likely save matches from failed fires, thanks to the firestrikers higher Bonus Chance.
*Using a lit Torch to start campfires is an effective way to save matches/firestriker durability.
*New matches can be acquired from Beachcombing or from the Trader (even on Interloper).

Trivia
*Wood Matches are branded as the product "Trusty Matches".
*Despite being contained inside a cardboard box, no tinder is given or harvestable when wooden matches are used up unlike cardboard boxes present across Great Bear Island.
*If a player lights a match and holds onto it for too long, the match will burn their fingers, but will not result in any condition loss
*When dropped on the ground, the box appears upside-down, obscuring the logo.
