Hidden Caches are small containers filled with useful loot found consistently through the many Episodes of Wintermute as part of various side missions.

They can also be found in Survival Mode. Currently, they only exist in Ash Canyon, Blackrock, Bleak Inlet, Hushed River Valley and Sundered Pass. They spawn in different locations for each playthrough, their number depending on the difficulty. Hushed River Valley which has the highest # of them, will spawn a minimum of 7 (min of 1 on interloper/misery).

They contain medium-high level food and clothes and, sometimes, even books. A Hidden Cache has a total capacity of 15.00 kg.
Mountaineering Boots are a type of Clothing in The Long Dark obtained exclusively in Wintermute.

Overview
Mountaineering Boots stats are identical to Mukluks, except they are 0.50kg lighter.

Their appearance is similar to Trail Boots, but with yellow laces instead of red ones.

Redux Episode 1
Mountaineering Boots are given to the player by Grey Mother in Wintermute if the player completes the side mission One Last Thing.

They can be carried into Episode 2: Luminance Fugue if they are still in the player's inventory, but are otherwise unique to Episode 1.

The Boots are lost in Episode 4: Fury, Then Silence if they were in the player's inventory at the end of Episode 2, likely discarded by Mathis in order to make transporting Mackenzie easier.

Predux Episode 1
They are given by Grey Mother once the player fully raises her Trust and selects the "BETTER BOOTS" dialogue option.

They can be carried into Episode 2: Luminance Fugue if they are still in the player's inventory, but are otherwise unique to Episode 1.
Trivia
It's implied by Grey Mother that these boots once belonged to Lilith Barker, since they are the best footwear for climbing mountains.<gallery>

Mystery Lake Supply Caches is a side mission in Episode 2 of the story. There are six caches to be found in total. To unlock the individual tasks, one has to find a corresponding note or letter first.

Objectives
*Find the cache near the old Hunting Lodge in the Broken Railroad region.
*Find the cache at the end of the ravine in the Broken Railroad region.
*Find the cache in the Clear Cut in Mystery Lake.
*Find the cache under some tree roots in the Forlorn Muskeg.
*Find the cache in Alan's Cave in Mystery Lake.
*Find the cache near the entrance to Forlorn Muskeg region from Mystery Lake.

Loot
*The cache near the old Hunting Lodge.
**~30% condition Mukluks and more.
*The cache at the end of the ravine.
**Climbing Socks, Wool Longjohns, Flare, Water, and Sewing Kit.
*The cache in the Clear Cut.
**2 Tomato Soup, Lantern Fuel, Antiseptic, and an Energy Bar.
*The cache under some tree roots.
**A worn Balaclava, a Firestriker, 1 Accelerant, and a mouldy Granola Bar.
*The cache in Alan's Cave.
**Food and water
*The cache near the entrance to Forlorn Muskeg region from Mystery Lake.
**3 Accelerant, Pinnacle Peaches, and a Tinder Plug.

Walkthrough
To find the caches, you first have to find the matching note or letter. These can be found in the following places:
*At the backside of the stairs at the entry of the Hunting Lodge; leading towards the Hunting Lodge cache. This cache contains a letter which unlocks the quest Aurora Hatch.
*At a corpse leaning on the logs of a crashed log wagon of the log train in Forlorn Muskeg, near the entrance to the Broken Railroad region; leading towards the ravine cache.
*On the desk inside one of the lake cabins (the one next to the cabin for which you need the key #2); leading towards the Clear Cut cache.
*Inside a pickup truck next to a yellow train/engine near the collapsed bridge in the Broken Railroad region; leading towards the tree root cache.
*On a metal desk on the second floor of the Carter Hydro Dam; leading towards the cache in Alan's Cave.
*On the table inside the new Forestry Lookout; leading towards the cache near the entrance to Forlorn Muskeg.

Transcripts
Whenever Mackenzie finds a Hidden Cache, he will say a variation of these lines:

* Mackenzie: "I knew I'd find something here."
* Mackenzie: "There you are."
* Mackenzie: "I've been looking for you."
* Mackenzie: "Well well...what have we here."
* Mackenzie: "Found it!"
* Mackenzie: "Ah ha...here it is."
Deerskin Boots are a type of craftable Clothing in The Long Dark.

General information
Deerskin boots are among the best boots available. Insulated Boots and Ski Boots offer more warmth and windchill, but have higher mobility penalty and weight.

Deerskin boots are comparable to the rare Mukluks, which are 0.5kg lighter but offer slightly less protection and less waterproof (Deerskin/Insulated Boots 50% vs. Mukluks 40%). The primary advantage of Deerskin Boots possess over Mukluks is their reliability in acquisition: they can be crafted in all game modes (including Interloper), and do not require Leather for repairs.<gallery>
The Wool Shirt's stats are nearly identical to the Thin Wool Sweater, but it is more waterproof and faster to repair. It can be found in residential locations and other clothing spawns, and is somewhat rare.
Banged up flashlight.

For the unique version of the Flashlight, see Miner's Flashlight.

The Flashlight is a light emitting, self-defense tool in The Long Dark. It is available in both Wintermute and Survival mode, and was added in the launch of Episode 2: Luminance Fugue.

Overview
The Flashlight is battery-powered portable light source used as a modern industrial age era replacement of the Torch and Storm Lantern, but is unfortunately no longer functional due to the effects of the First Flare (much like all modern electronics currently).

When equipped and used by the player, they will receive a message informing them that the battery is currently dead, making it little more than an unusable paper weight. During an Aurora or Glimmer Fog, however, the Flashlight battery will instantly recharge to full battery capacity, and can be used as a portable light source again.

Flashlight is not available on Interloper.

Powered
Turning the Flashlight on creates a cone of light, but will slowly drain its battery. While a Flashlight is on and wielded, its "high beam" mode (RMB) can be used, rapidly draining its battery but greatly lighting the surrounding area.

A 100% charged flashlight will last 1 hour of continuous use, or around 25 seconds when using the high beam mode. When used and turned off, Flashlights will slowly recharge back to their maximum storage capacity, as long as an Aurora/Glimmer Fog event remains active. Once these events end, the battery will immediately die, and the Flashlight will become unusable until the next event.

High Beam
The high beam setting of the Flashlight can be used as a temporary defense against charging Aurora predators: (aurora Wolf, aurora Timberwolf, and aurora Poisoned Wolf, and aurora Bear), but only so long as the battery is not completely drained. Flashlight high beams have absolutely no effect on aurora Cougar.

Flashlight do not effect wildlife when powered by Glimmer Fog (since they are currently not aurora predators).

Decay
Storm Lanterns and Flashlights are the only tools that do not Decay, even when equipped during a Struggle. However they spawn with various levels of Condition and can be repaired with Scrap Metal.

Tips
* When turned on, a Flashlight provides light, but slowly drains its battery. The battery will be instantly full at the start of an Aurora/Glimmer Fog event, but will immediately be drained once these events end.
*The Flashlight is useful for saving matches for torches or lamp fuel for storm lanterns, and players may take advantage of this during an Aurora/Glimmer Fog event when traveling through low light areas.
*When turned on, Flashlights provide a limited cone of light effect that has the farthest reach of any wieldable light source. They however do not saturate the entire nearby area with light, unlike flares, torches, and storm lanterns. This can create a "tunnel vision" effect that leaves nearby corners of the player's vision unlit. Turning the High Beam mode on will greatly saturate the area in light, at the cost of battery life.
* A Flashlight's high beam (Place / Aim / Throw key) is effective at stopping the charge of an Aurora Wolf, Aurora Timberwolf or Aurora Bear. High Beam drains a large amount of battery while active, but only a short burst is required to stop a charging aurora animal.
* Flashlights can remain powered even when dropped or placed, allowing them to be used as temporary stationary lights during an aurora. Their high beam cannot be active when placed/dropped.
* The Flashlight requires tools and Scrap Metal to repair.
*Scrapping a Flashlight will give 1 Scrap Metal.

Trivia
During an Aurora or Glimmer Fog event, using the Flashlight on High will cause the tip of the Flashlight to emit sparks, visually explaining why the battery power dies so quickly. Despite the obviously high power consumption, the battery will never short circuit/suffer critical operational damage from being overcharged.

The light the Flashlight emits in High Beam Mode flashes between the colors Purple, Green, and Blue.

The Flashlight appears to be loosely based on a 1920s vintage Ever-Ready flashlight, however uses a LED bulb as opposed to the Ever-Ready's fluorescent bulb.
You have an infection that could kill you if left untreated.
Infection has a chance to occur when an Infection Risk is not disinfected. Once the player has the affliction, they will lose around 5% condition every hour and fatigue will increase.

Infection is treated by consuming either 2 x Antibiotics or 1 x cup Reishi Tea/Burdock Tea, followed by 8 hours of cumulative sleep. If left untreated, you will die.

Snow Pants are a type of Clothing in The Long Dark.

Snow Pants have the second highest warmth bonus in the game for pants, second only to Wolfskin Pants, and are tied with Deerskin Pants for the highest windproof bonus in the game.

Snow Pants have the same total Warmth+Windproof bonus as Wolfskin Pants, while weighing significantly less, but offering half the protection bonus. Deerskin Pants similarly have higher protection and weight, but less warmth bonus.

Because of their excellent weight to warmth ratio compared to both crafted pants, a player may want to wear one set of snow pants along with a set of crafted pants. When doing so, a player should make certain to wear Deerskin Pants on the outside layer (to benefit from their higher protection and waterproof values), or Wolfskin Pants on the inside (when not in danger of wildlife struggles) to benefit from their higher warmth value.

Even if wolfskin pants are available, a player may still find it more convenient to wear two pairs of Snow Pants, or one pair of Snow Pants with a pair of Combat Pants on their inside layer, to conserve their carry weight.
Unofficial
Misty Falls Cave is an unofficial name for the cave right next to the Misty Falls Picnic Area, located in the far northeast corner of Pleasant Valley. It offers some shelter, but beware as on colder days you may freeze to death.

Overview
There can be decent amounts of gear inside, in addition to an abundance of Coal. It is strongly advised to bring a light source as there is a spiraling ramp at the start of the cave which can cause major injury to the player, even resulting in death. In addition, there can be various wood items in the area to gather, and up to two wolves may spawn in the area. In rare instances, a Bear can wander from their den to the east. Don't worry, there are no wolves inside the cave.
Item spawns
*Numerous stones and coal
*A couple of frozen corpses which spawn various items
*Sticks fallen from holes in the cave's ceiling
*A metal box containing various items right after the entrance
*An "Advanced Guns Guns Guns!" research book occasionally spawns next to the metal box.
*At a dead-end, a bedroll can spawn with a Flare and some food lying around in the vicinity.
*If lucky, a survival bow can spawn in an intersection in the cave, sometimes next to a corpse.
*A small room across the waterfall: a revolver or a hunting rifle
*Outside the cave, at the picnic area, a frozen corpse may have their rifle lying next to them.
*A chance of Spelunker's Lantern spawning after the waterfall in the crouching area
Episode 3
*The three frozen corpses inside, one of whose head was crushed by a fallen rock, could have been the friends of the mountain climber who left a page of his journal in the Mountaineer's Hut in Timberwolf Mountain.
*However, this incident could have instead occurred at the Point of Disagreement, not far from the cave.

Trivia
* The area accessed through the waterfall inside the cave has small patches of bio-luminescent moss along some of the walls, just like the ice caves in Hushed River Valley.
* Up to two hunting rifles (one inside, one outside) and a bow with arrows can be found here in the same run.

Overview
Moose-Hide Cloaks are crafted torso wear with extremely high waterproof and the second highest protection of any item, right behind the Ballistic Vest, but offer less warmth than the Expedition Parka, Wolfskin Coat and Bearskin Coat. Moose Hide Cloaks require Cured Moose Hide to craft and repair, making them difficult to produce and maintain.

Repair
Moose Hides can be difficult to acquire due to the rarity and danger of moose, as well as requiring 10 days to cure; this makes repairing Moose-Hide Cloaks challenging. Instead, existing cloaks may be harvested (yielding 1 cured moose hide) and then re-crafted into a new cloak. This process takes 16.67 hours longer than repairing and is more expensive with Cured Guts: but allows repeated use of the same hide.
*

Note: Crafting Moose-Hide Cloaks costs durability of the used tool (e.g. hunting knife), though this is usually less resource-intensive than to kill another moose.

Overview
The Bearskin Coat is an extremely warm, but also heavy crafted torso clothing produced from 2 Cured Black Bear Hide. When worn it has a chance to frighten nearby wolves which detect the player.

Bearskin Coats provides two more degrees of warmth than the rare Expedition Parka, but one less windproof; however the bearskin coat is more than three times heavier. In Interloper where the Expedition Parka cannot spawn, the Bearskin Coat is the warmest torso clothing available.
Overview
Wool Longjohns are best-in-slot underwear, being superior to Thermal Underwear in most regards. Compared to Thermal Underwear, Longjohns are 1.0°C warmer, 15% more waterproof, and give a slight protection bonus (only if not wearing any pants). They also decay at half the rate Thermal Underwear does, and give more condition per repair. The only disadvantage of Wool Longjohns that they are twice as heavy as Thermal Underwear.

Deerskin Pants are a type of craftable Clothing made from Cured Deer Hide and Cured Gut.

Overview
Deerskin Pants are less warm compared to Deerskin Boots, yet require more materials to craft. However, in an early Interloper game when the player has only a single pair of Jeans, crafting the deerskin pants may be slightly preferable because they can be added onto the player's existing outfit (two slots for outer legs), whereas using the Deerskin Boots would require swapping out whatever boots the player is already wearing.

They offer the highest protection, water- and windproofing bonuses of all available outer legwear and are only surpassed by the rare Snow Pants and the hard to obtain Wolfskin Pants in terms of warmth. They are, however, also second only to Wolfskin Pants in terms of weight, and are tied for both the worst warmth-to-weight ratio and mobility penalty.

Strategy
Deerskin pants are an excellent outer layer if combined with lighter pants that focus on warmth bonus or warmth-to-weight ratio. Wearing two pairs of deerskin pants is possible but will add up to significant mobility reduction and encumbrance.

Since they can be repaired with deer hides instead of cloth they are arguably one of the best choice for late game leg clothing, alongside Wolfskin Pants.

They are possible to obtain reliably and relatively early in the game by harvesting Deer Carcasses that can be found at several locations in all regions or obtained by actively hunting.
Dusting Sulfur is a crafting material in The Long Dark.
Overview
Dusting Sulfur is used to craft Can of Gunpowder, a resource for Gunsmithing. This may only be done at the Ammunition Workbench in Bleak Inlet or at Blackrock Prison. Bags of dusting sulfur can be found in many former industrial and agricultural sites on Great Bear Island.

0.10 kg of gunpowder may also be used as an accelerant for starting fires. This gives dusting sulfur a use on Interloper difficulty despite firearms not being present.
A beat up prybar. Useful for opening locked containers.Prybar is a tool in The Long Dark for opening some locked objects, breaking holes in the ice for fishing, and self-defense against wolves.

Overview
Prybar is a Tool used to open locked containers, such as lockers and Car trunks (they cannot be used to open Cargo Containers). It is additionally used to break the ice on ice-fishing holes, and as a weapon during Struggles. They cannot be repaired but can be harvested for some Scrap Metal. Prybars are fairly common and can be found in almost any condition. It's one of the most important early game gear allowing you to open locked containers which sometimes have better gear.

Prybar are not repairable or craftable.

Uses of a Prybar
* Open locked Lockers and locked Car Trunks of Cars
* 4 Locked Doors on the Island can only be opened with a Prybar
** Front and Back door of the Orca Gas Station in Mountain Town
** The tunnel door at Surfeit Trestle in Far Range Branch Line
** Front door to the Headframe Building in Zone of Contamination
* Open or maintain holes in the ice for Ice Fishing (bladed tools break ice faster, but take more condition loss).
* Self Defense during a Wolf Struggle.
* The elevator doors during the mission Renewed Hope in Episode 2: Luminance Fugue need a Prybar to open.

When carried and selected for self-defense at the start of a Wolf Struggle, Prybar deal low damage with a low chance per-hit to cause the wolf to flee. Prybar are almost as effective at filling the Struggle Meter as the Hunting Knife, and slightly more effective than the Improvised Knife. Prybar take low damage from being used in a struggle. For more information on Struggles, see: Wildlife Struggles.
Locations
Prybar are most commonly found in industrial locations, fishing huts, mines, vehicles or near frozen corpses. They may be found within frequently tool chests or lockers.

Mountain Town

* Inside the Milton Credit Union, next to a corpse and a backpack.
* Inside the shed at the Paradise Meadows Farm, which is also one of the potential spawns for the key to the farmhouse.
* In the back of a pickup truck at Paradise Meadows Farm.
* In a truck at the entrance to Milton Park.
}}Snow Shelters are temporary shelters which can be constructed outdoors in The Long Dark.

They provide wind protection and temperature bonus while inside of them, but degrade over time and eventually become ruined unless repaired.

Mechanics
Air temperature inside the snow shelter will always be +15°C higher than air temperature outside the shelter, even if the shelter condition degrades. Additionally shelter provides +3°C bonus when passing time or sleeping (see below). The shelter will provide the bonus even when ruined, until the player leaves it. The warmth bonus from clothing is also used when calculating Feels Like (the windshield warmth bonus from clothing doesn't apply).

When inside a Snow Shelter the player can still light campfires, use weapons, as well other tasks such as harvesting, repairing clothes, eating or drinking. The player can rest or pass time inside Snow Shelters (similar to cars), even without a Bedroll. If a bedroll is selected, the shelter will provide an additional +3°C warmth bonus. This bonus does not decay together with the shelter, and a 3% shelter will still provide full +3°C bonus.

Once constructed, a snow shelter will degrade from 100% to 0% condition over roughly 188 in-game hours (on Stalker mode) or almost 8 in-game days, after which it will become ruined and can no longer be used or repaired. The decay is not completely linear and is likely influenced by local weather. If dismantled before reaching 0% condition, some of the Sticks and Cloth used to create it can be reclaimed. Once ruined, dismantling a Snow Shelter will not yield any materials.

The snow shelter can be crafted using the Radial Menu:

# Open the Radial Menu
# Select Camp Craft (left side)
# Select Snow Shelter (right side)

After selecting, the player will have to find somewhere to place it. The shelter will turn green when a valid location has been found, if the shelter is unable to be placed it will be red, moving to a leveled plane or bringing the shelter closer should allow it to be placed.

Amount of calories used varies, testing revealed an estimated range of 112 to 263 calories. The value seems to also depend on the character's condition and the weather.

Repairing a snow shelter
To repair a snow shelter, the player can access the Snow Shelter Menu by clicking on the snow shelter and selecting Repair.

Depending on the condition of the snow shelter, repairing it may require sticks and cloth. The more degraded the shelter is, the more time and materials necessary to repair it. Up until 74%, the shelter will not require cloth. When at 75%, 3 sticks are required to bring it back to 100%. It takes approximately 1 day and 17.5 hours (~42 hours) for shelter to degrade to 75% condition. The shelter will require 1 cloth around 74%, 2 cloth around 48%, and 3 under 30%. The maximum cost of repairing a shelter (when it is 3%) is 10 sticks and 3 cloth.

Dismantling a snow shelter
Snow shelters can be dismantled, and a portion of the items used for building it can be reclaimed (if they are not ruined). This takes 20 in-game minutes.

The amount of calories used varies, with testing showing an estimated range of 38 to 88 calories used while dismantling. It seems to depend on the character's condition and the weather.

Dismantling a snow shelters above 0% condition yields:
* 10 Sticks
* 2 Cloth
Locations
Cans of Gunpowder can spawn rarely in high loot quality locations of Great Bear Island, such as Cinder Hills Coal Mine, Maintenance Yard, or Skeeter's Ridge basement. They can also be found in Prepper Caches of any type and inside of Safes.

Spawnpoints
A large amount of pre-placed Gunpowder cans are located within Blackrock Prison, namely 2 can spawn on the catwalks/roofs leading from guard barracks to the infirmary, 1 is almost always located on the workbench and 1 is inside Cellblock C inside the guardroom near the cells. A large amount of Dusting Sulfur and Stump Remover are also scattered throughout the prison meaning even more gunpowder can be crafted.

At least 1 Gunpowder can will be located inside Last Prospect mine, usually located at level 2 on the bottom of the collapsed wooden stairs in the main room.

Trivia
* Gunpowder (black powder) consists of a mixture of sulfur (S), charcoal (C), and potassium nitrate (saltpeter, KNO3). The sulfur and charcoal act as fuels while the saltpeter is an oxidizer.
*The in-game recipe actually creates black powder (considering ingredients), which in real life would be almost useless to reload any modern rounds due to much slower combustion and therefore lesser kinetic energy of bullets. Using ammunition crafted in that way could result in jamming of the barrel. Black powder also leaves a lot more residue in the firearm, causing the need to clean it more often.
* In previous versions, a glitch was present where reloading save files or exiting/entering buildings would refill dropped cans of gunpowder to their maximum of 0.5kg.
* The Errant Pilgrim update introduced Gunsmithing.

Revolver Ammunition and Revolver Cartridge is ammunition for the Revolver. It can be found alone, as a single round, or as 10 rounds in a box. It can also be crafted at an Ammunition Work Bench. The box is branded as a product called Bullseye.

Overview
When fired, an empty Revolver Shell Casing will reside inside the Revolver until it is reloaded, in which it is immediately drop to the ground and can then be picked up for creating new cartridges. If the Revolver is manually unloaded in the Backpack menu, all casings and unspent ammunition is placed in the player's inventory.

Harvesting
When harvested, a single Revolver Cartridge has a chance to produce the following after 5 minutes of Harvesting (higher Gunsmithing Skill leads to a higher chance to recover most or all materials):

* 1 Bullet
* 1 Revolver Shell Casing
* 0.01kg Can of Gunpowder

Crafting
Crafting at an Ammunition Work Bench requires the following recourses:Crafting quality Condition Revolver Ammunition is based on the Gunsmithing skill, with lower level Gunsmithing producing lower quality cartridges that are more likely to misfire, no matter the condition of the Revolver. The quality and Condition of the crafted ammunition will always be found next to the name of the ammo:

* Poor 20% (Level 1)
* Mediocre 40% (Level 2)
* Good 60% (Level 3)
* Great 80% (Level 4)
* Perfect 100% (Level 5)

Ammunition that is found in the game world will always be in "Perfect" condition.

Trivia
*Since the Revolver is lacking a speed loader mechanism, the character will load cartridges one by one.
*The default Revolver in-game most closely resembles a Smith & Wesson Model 27, which uses .357 Magnum ammunition; however, in-game Revolver Ammunition appears to be .32 S&W Long. A cut icon for Revolver Bullets named .44 Magnum might also be the correct cartridge caliber.
*Revolver Ammunition size is much smaller than the Rifle Ammunition and can thus be hard to spot on the ground.
*10 or more dropped rounds appear as a box of rounds.
*Ammunition for the revolver is much more abundant than ammo for the rifle, and can be found randomly in most locations.

Stump Remover is a crafting material for Gunsmithing in The Long Dark.

Overview
Stump Remover is used to craft Can of Gunpowder, a resource for Gunsmithing. This may only be done at the Ammunition Workbench in Bleak Inlet or at Blackrock Prison. Bottles of Stump Remover can be found in residential or agricultural sites on Great Bear Island.

0.10 kg of gunpowder may also be used as an accelerant for starting fires, or used for crafting Noisemakers. This gives stump remover a use on Interloper difficulty, despite firearms not being present.
