Don't write this place off as a good base because of the wolves. There's a partially uprooted tree to the left of the front door that you can climb but the wolves cannot. Crouch-walk over to it if there are wolves about and then open up on them with whatever ranged weapon you want once you're on top of it. This is also a good strategy for safely hunting the moose that spawns here.

Don't bother coming here without a hacksaw. If you spawn here on interloper, you can check the Mountaineer's Hut for one. There's a chance for a hacksaw to spawn in the tail section at the summit, but it's a big gamble for a starting character.
