Bears are the fucking worst. I was playing Hopeless Rescue and I was doing amazing. TWO EXPEDITION PARKAS, one from Carter Dam and one from Signal Hill. Snow pants, gauntlets, balaclava, revolver, hacksaw, insulated boots, salty crackers, energy bars, firestriker, hatchet, ans juust loaded with goodies. I was on my climb of TM, and I turn a corner, and over a little ridge a bear comes over, waddling his fat ass over here. It's to tight to make it through without entering his aggro radius, but I try anyway. I wedge myself into a ledge as this little shit is charging at me and I foolishly think that his model it to large to get to me, so I start shooting him with my revolver. But his broken pathfinding AI sfound a way to get to me, where he proceded to maul me. I thought there was a little grace period before he tries to kill you again, but aparently not. He mauls me again, and suprisingly I don't die, I'm at like 7% condition, and I need to get out of there. I fall off the little ledge, suprisingly not getting a sprain, but aggroing the bear again. I tried to sprint away, but there was no cover to hide behind. so I ended up getting jumpscared by that goddamn bear. Sorry, I just needed to get that out of my system.

I learned this from Interloper, where starvation is the only meal for that game mode. Starving is actually one of the slowest ways to die in the game, and it is possible to starve the whole day and not be at to low condition. If you are struggling with food, you only need 5 cattail stalks per day right before you go to bed to regain just enough condition to break even. You had better not be dehydrated though, because that double condition hit can kill you. (May need a few more stalks if you're going to be sleeping for 12 hours instead of Interlopers 10 hours.)

The supply caches are nice boosts late game, and the caves do make traveling a bit easier, but there is basically no reason to come up here, mostly due to the lack of standing structures. Other than the Mountaineer's Hut, there is no place that has four walls and a roof over your head.
